High Dollar Payments?

Hey guys,

I currently have my 72 Topps FB set for sale on E-Bay. There are some legitimate buyers considering the set, and I am confident it will sell.
My question is, when selling an item for approx $10K, how do you handle the exchange? One prospect wants the item in hand before paying in full and I can say I don't blame him. Are escrow services safe? Should I fly and deliver it in person?
Need some thoughts or experiences from anyone with experience.

Thanks a million,

    RobBob,

I wish I had an answer for you, but I actually am finding myself in a very similar situation right now.

I am looking to sell a car on eBay that should go for between $15-20K. I have heard that escrow is a good option. Others have also said that certified bank check or cashiers check would work as well. Like yourself, I want to be safe rather than sorry with so much money on the table.

I would be curious to hear what others have to say. Also, if anyone has sold a car on eBay, please PM me. image

    Thanks,

  • I have always thought that for an amount over $10,000 flying to meet the person face to face isn't a bad idea at all. afterall, whats a $200 plane ticket when the item is going for that much?

heck, to insure an amount for $10K through the mail would probably cost a significant portion of the 200 dollar plane ticket anyway. all you have to come up with is a day off to do the traveling.

    just my 2cents worth
  • I have completed a few high dollar transactions on ebay, between $3,000 and $15,000. I required a certified check and shipped upon receipt of the funds in each case. Never had a problem. One of these was a complete PSA graded set, which I shipped in 3 separate packages because of the size and weight. It cost me about $130 to ship the three packages by USPS Registered Insured mail, probably quite a bit less than airfare and the hassle of having to take the time to deliver in person. I don't know what I would have done if the buyer had requested the item in hand before paying ... maybe then I would have paid for the airfare - it's probably worth it if you know the bidder will be satisfied. Just a few thoughts - I hope that helps.

It's all a moot point now. The set didn't sell, and my opening bid was 67% of SMR. Thats a sad commentary on the market for sets. I am now discouraged from sinking any more money into building sets. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it, and want to keep most of what I buy, but I sank a lot of money in set, a lot more than I was asking. The 72 Topps FB is no shabby set either. Mastro may be my next stop, we will see.
