Question for sellers who have used both eBay and a website ...

For those of you who have sold coins on both eBay AND your own website:

1. Which has resulted in you selling the most coins?

2. Which has resulted in giving you better prices for those coins?

... or do you see any differences at all?

  • I sell the vast majority of my coins on my website and relatively few on eBay. In my opinion, eBay is great for selling unusual or truly rare coins but not that great for selling "common" coins such as Morgan silver dollars, silver eagles, or common US proof sets. There is simply a glut of these coins available and too many sellers (dealers and collectors alike) make eBay a "Buyer's Market". For example, there are over 9,000 current listings on eBay for Morgan Dollars and only 6 listings for 1793 Chain Cent which is truly a rare coin.

Another good example is a 2004 silver eagle roll which is "common as dirt". My current wholesale cost is $178 today and typical eBay selling prices are roughly that same amount. Subtract eBay fees and PayPal fees and the seller loses money on such a sale. This is great for buyers, not so great for sellers.

  • That's a great question, OF. I don't have my own website but I do have coins on a specialized Numismatic website and I've been active on Ebay for several years. It's hard to quantify the results because I usually list my coins closer to actual cost on Ebay because of the listing and final value fees (I want 'em to sell). My average is about 2/3 of my listings sell the 1st time on Ebay for my minimum bid (which is usually 10-30% above my cost) on a 7 day auction. Coins are selling at the "other" website (and quite a few offers) but slower than Ebay because of the different type format. I'd give Ebay the edge if you want to sell for a fair price quickly and the "other" site the edge if you have some exceptional coins that you expect to take more time to sell and need a better price. I feel they work very well together. Bob image
