The Government Warned me about this coin, the seller warned me - but I bought it anyway

IMPORTANT: This coin has never been place in circulation by the U.S. Government. However, due to its heavy scratches or tarnish it was culled out of the "Uncirculated" category. Please see scan of the card that came with the coin. Obverse is 2/3 tarnished, no scratches. Reverse is perfect.

Hard to tell from the pictures, but the reverse looks PL and since the seller said there are no scratches, I guess the only problem is that darn tarnish covering 2/3 of the obverse.
For $170, I guess I can always dip it off.image

I have one just like that. I love the disclaimer about tarnish.

  • Back then (1973), "tarnish" was the devil and you could buy those from the GSA for only $15. I bought one, wish I had the money then to buy 100 (I was only 9)!!
  • I feel your pain. I was only 11 and could only buy one myself. I didn't get a rainbow tarnished piece though, just a little light tan textile tarnish on the center of the reverse of my Unc 1881-CC. I didn't think it looked bad. If I had had the money I'd have bought a bunch more of them at $15 each.

I ordered 75 from the GSA sale @ $15 each. There was so many orders that the GSA cut everybodys order to 5. Many did not get any at all. A dealer friend of mine ordered some and got none. He was not happy. I did get five. 1882, 1883, 1884, and 2 - 1885's. Not bad at all. Here is one of the 85's. It's got some of that nasty tarnish on it.
