Peace Dollar Experts....(or anyone who knows the answer)

Does anyone know why - or what causes the long single line scratches that I have seen on more then a handfull of MS Peace Dollars? These lines are (seemingly) always at the bottom of the neck of Liberty.

No they are definately "concave". I have sold one before and was curious why it did not effect the grade. Almost seems like they should be BB...But have seen at least four now in TPG holders without net grade.

Would this be considered a (1925-P) "Die Variety"....It is not listed in Van Allen & Mallis.

Would you personally pay a premium for it?
  • Not a VAM.... but most Peace $ have die cracks on them......especially in this area. I believe it's due to it being the weakest area on the dies..... Some dates that have more than others.......

That is a very common place for a die crack. As such, it is not considered a VAM.

it's a classic die crack for the peace dollar series. that particular area is clearly & consistently the stress point for the obv. die of the peace dollar. you'll find virtually that identical crack on just about every issue, except for the 1921, which being struck in high relief (different dies) had a different stress point.

you can occasionally find really nice, advanced stages of that same die crack.

  • I have a couple in PCGS holders. A 1923 - P graded MS63 that`s a straight line and a 1923 - D graded VF35 that starts at the neck and goes counter clock wise, goes through " LIBERTY ", and ends at the rim below " IN " in the motto.

There isn`t anything more I can add to what has already been said.
