Estimates of how many people collect each series?

Greetings, All -
I was thinking that it might be useful to have some idea of how many collectors there are for each series. That way, you could better judge by the population reports if a coin is rare relative to the number of people who might be interested. For instance, a coin with a population of 1000 with 250 higher might be more scarce than a coin with a population of 15 with 3 higher, depending on how many collectors are interested in the coin/series.
What do you think? Would there be any way of compiling such information?

Hopefully my post will be infectious and all the other collectors will post here so you can compile an accurate census. Please let us know the results.
So, the tally so far is:
Morgans: 1
Morgans pl/dmpl: 1
Thanks for undertaking this massive project.

"42" is the answer to the ultimate question.
Kennedys, 1964, proofs, accented hair, deep/ultra cameo.
(I still trying to find out which coin shows LAVA has been going to; but that's another thread.)

Great Idea....but WOW...I think UN-knowable
different levels of completion, different grades in which they are collecting them, and
are willing to tolerate different amouts of price increases before they drop out and
collect something else. Many collectors will sell a set as soon as they finish it and some
will start another. Some will expand a set to include varieties, errors, patterns, and
related items. Some will let a partial collection sit for years before coming back to it.
Some areas are collected almost solely by advanced numismatists and some are largely
the province of beginners.
The best bet to get a feel for the numbers of collectors is to figure what the benchmark
coins sell for. These are coins where you can get a feel for the total number in existence.
Then you can compare the pricing of similar coins to get a feel for the number of collect-
ors. But remember that your final number will be in average collectors and there may be
no such animal.
