Hilarious con job: $2 million collection in 8-ounce packages

This is one of the funniest auctions I've seen in awhile.

It may not be a scam, technically. Essentially he's saying: "Trust me, I didn't cherry-pick this collection! I'm not trying to dump my worthless junk! Honest!"

Uh huh. Buying cards by weight ... What are the odds you're getting half a pound of commons for your $20 inc. shipping? Sorta reminds me of the days that a coin dealer in Littleton, NH, sold "guaranteed unsearched" bags of coins by weight. Maybe they still do that?

The following hilarious line way down at the bottom of the auction says it all:

"I simply have my 13 year old nephew weigh and package them as he knows nothing about sports cards. Therefore I can't guarantee what will be in each lot. Theoretically, you could get all commons however the odds are very slim due to the quantity and quality of our collection."

Oh yeah, I'm going to trust his nephew not to pull any valuable cards. If said nephew is even real. If said collection is even real. If the photos have any relation at all to what he's actually shipping.

Many of us on these boards could make up a fair number of 8-ounce bundles of commons. For $20 a pop? Hmmmm ...

I'll take fries with that half-pounder!

The scans of the 55 Bowman FB are stolen and have been used on 2 other fraudulent auctions.

    Loves me some shiny!

It seems like, for $18,000 or so - you can purchase all the collection and get all the goodies ;-)
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Anyone notice his ebay ID is Houdini? He is going to pull a famous "escape with your money" trick for everyone.

    This is pretty funny.
I am looking for Nolan Ryan cards, esp. OPC and rare oddball issues, graded or not. Also I need quite a few 1956 Topps, PSA 6 or higher

    Current Sets in Progress:
1956 Topps Master Set PSA 6 or better
    1978 Topps PSA 9 or 10

I can tell you right now the chances of getting a valuable card in your purchase...0 as in Zero.

Of course this guy will have one or a few of his buddies or himself "win" some lots and leave feedback that a valuable card was in the lot they bought - in the hopes of suckering people in. He'll probably run this thing for months and months.

Here's a better investment that comes in "quarter pound" increments and two of these will set you back less money and give you more satisfaction!

My luck, I'll wind up with one of these Gems! God I hate this crap...this method of sales blows!

Houdini always said he would return from the dead - maybe that's where this guy should go!

This may still be a fraud, but his feedback from buyers indicates a few happy people. Who knows how demanding they are, though. image
  • Why would this seller offer a guarantee and then ask that it not be taken advantage of if he is legitimate? Has anyone ever had success in buying cards like this? It reminds me of some bad mall card shows I went to years ago where dealers tried to dump their commons in 100 count boxes for $1.00. I guess this seller is taking inflation into account in a big way.image
  • This is simply the ebay version of "Mr. Heart Attack" that used to be on QVC or home shopping network. You know the one, screaming and spitting and throwing cards in the floor. There's been a few threads on here about him. Anyhow, that is what this type of auction reminds me of.

Do you think he really has his 13-year-old nephew randomly distributing Jordan rookies and valuable vintage cards amongst the commons? I'm not spending $20 to find out!

  • Hey, Stone, thanks for the Don West bit. I sent this thread to my friend who actually worked the cameras for the old Shop at Home shouting guys show. He loved the bouncing heads! He told me he used to go home with headaches quite often because of their antics. Any Donruss Elite Dominator collectors out there?image
