Newb ? on collecting

How long did it take you to decide what to collect? I like way too many coins to decide on a specific type. I collect almost any coin that isn't in circulation anymore. But I also like proof Kennedy's and Franklins. Why do you have to collect a specific type? I started by actually searching for silver dollars for my Dad. I "used" some of his as a kid and didn't know they were anything special. So about 4 months ago I decided to purchase some for him for Christmas. Well what I found was this fire inside of me everytime I saw a coin that I have never seen before. I had to have it. It started with Morgans. Oh they are so beautiful. Then there was the Large cent. Now it is Gold....which I wont be able to but for some time. Then there was the forums... My father's Christmas present has turned into my obsession. But I can't focus on one group. Sorry...I am digressing. My question is how long did it take for you to decide on a specific goal and how could you control yourself to not vary from that goal?

P.S. My father is going to fall over at Christmas. I have coins for him that I don;t think he has ever seenimage

Well you have the personality of a Type Collector.

Instead of collecting dates within a series, you collect one of each type of coin minted. One good aspect of a type collection is you can buy high quality of common dates (or you can collect key date types, mix proofs and business strikes - any way you want to do it)

Here is the PCGS Complete US Type Set list

BTW - does your dad post here as doop(s) ?image

  • That's funny. My father thinks a computer is a tv without a remote therefore not on his list of amusements. He was raised in the south during the post war depression where no one had any money. He talked about the ration stamps they had to use and how the government took all of their metal for the war. I have actually purchased some ration stamps that I will also give him for Christmas. He likes to talk about the past and says they were happier back then without anything. He instilled hard work ethics and honest integrity in me. The coins I used were probably saved by him all of his life and therefore irreplaceable. He wouldn't know the difference between a ms66 or a g-4. I believe it is from him that I got the joy of collecting coins. Anyway, as you can tell I am proud of my father and enjoy all of his stories. I think you gave me a wonderful idea. I will check the link out because your description is exactly what I want. A variety of all coins minted. Of course I will have to narrow it down. But thanks. I was really feeling lost. You showed me a way I can focus.
