1958 MS67 Cam Lincoln?

I am waiting to see, but I think I was the high bidder on Teletrade for a 1958 MS67 Cam Lincoln. I didn't know that MS coins could be graded cameo.

It's not an MS coin, it's a proof. The label is a mechanical error.

that's actually a rare pre-SMS experimental piece. most collectors aren't aware of the issue, but it's something that the Mint tried prior to switching to the Memorial reverse. Breen states that there were approximately 10-12 struck in late 1958 but the eventual change was delayed until the government was certain that collectors were hoarding coins.

    hey Badger

i might add that many collectors are shocked and in a state of disbelief when they first find out about the trial SMS issues. generally, they refer to their Breens and find no mention of them, not understanding that the pertinent information was only in the book's first printing and deleted at WB's request in subsequent releases.

you need to remember that in the late 50's the "roll collecting" phenomenon was really strong and coins were vanishing from circulation by the millions, litterally. Ike was president at the time and RMN was up and coming. had the Republicans won the presidency in 1960 we would have seen this SMS policy instituted almost immediately after the election. with Kennedy winning the mood in Washington was a bit less paranoid and more optimistic. with LBJ's election in 1964, well, we all know what happened, and i ain't talkin' about an escalation in VietNam.

if this all sounds sinister, it is, but you'll need the 1st Edition Breens for the whole story.

Wow, Keets. I knew I was on to something, but had no real idea of how big this could be. Who do you think are holding the other samples made? Probably an ex-Mint director or two.

I'm going to start planning my retirement now on this baby.

    hey Badger

i'd actually be expecting a visit by the IRS or the Secret Service. no doubt they'll want this coin returned much like those 1975-6 Aluminum Cents that surface every now and then.

Thanks Jonesy, I knew Keets was right. This is big, very big.

I just called my boss and told him to shove it. I won't be needing that job any more cause I'm on a roll now baby, yeah!

Now, I just need for this to come out in the Pop Report. Tip Top Pop.
