PSA alignment on horizontal cards?

I really like the All-Star cards from some of the Topps sets from the 1950s and 60s, and they would be a great way to build a nice collection of Hall of Famers on a budget. (In fact, they were the first ever vintage cards I collected as a kid in the mid-80's.)

However, it's really too bad that PSA doesn't have a consistent rule on how to slab horizontal cards.

This might sounds stupid, but I'd probably avoid a card that's slabbed "wrong" as it wouldn't fit with the rest of the collection.

Is this a mistake or is it just random chance?

Check it out.

  • I've wondered the same thing, as I agree with you. I've run across a few 1960 Topps that were slabbed "wrong". I avoid them. Great question that will hopefully lead to an answer.

in my OCD-like opinion, i think all horizontal cards should be holdered like the top two (bottom of card facing left)..

PA - I agree that the top 2 is the way to go w/ this subset. When I worked on this set, I had all but 1 of the cards facing this way, the lone card to be the other way was the Bob Gibson AS, I had it re-holdered at a Fort Washington show so it would be consistent w/ the others.
But on some other issues, the card back should decide how the front looks. I don't like any card back holdered upside down, regardless which way the front is facing...jay
  • good luck getting a straight answer on this. it has been asked before, but no one will commit to anything, and they keep on screwing it up.

1960 Topps Baseball - most cards are horizontal; the manager cards and some world series cards are vertical and the backs face the same way as the horizontals. But there are a couple of special cards (Master and Mentor, Sophmore Stalwarts) where the backs face the other way. Frustrating!!!! Add that to what Chris said about wrong-slabbed cards and you got a helluva mess.

I've got a '61 NL K Leaders card slabbed the wrong way and it drives me crazy to see it with my other horizontal cards.
