I always preach that 9 out of 10 early U.S. coins listed as having a "straight clip" on eBay are actually victims of some form of post-Mint damage. Well the 10th coin showed up in my P.O. Box today:
The two key things to look for on a genuine clip, both in evidence on the coin above, are weakness of the rim opposite the clip, known as the Blakesley effect; and weakness of the denticles at either edge of the clip. These are usually visible even in a lousy little eBay picture like the one in the original auction. You won't necessarily see both, but if you don't see either then you're probably not looknig at a Mint error.
