Thanks for the picture. On my coin, the top of the 8 is very flat, however, I can not make out the slant of the 7 that is very evident in your picture. When I noticed the flat top to the 8 on my coin, I got a bit excited.
I would too. I've seen a good number of 1918-S's with that characteristic you're speaking of, a flatter top on the eight. I've got a couple myself. The raised date design had its share of striking difficulties/weaknesses, and this date/mm is certainly no exception.

The biggest indicator is the bottom of the eight, which you see the slant of the seven, even if worn down quite a bit.
