GB coin question... Model Pennys and 1/2 Pennys

Model 1/2P in pennies, they look bi-metal. When are they from and what are they worth. If you want pics let me know and I'll post them tonight... There were 5 of them in this collection I bought, the 2X2s show the DOP in 1976 and they were priced $25 each then... What do the experts say?
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I'm no expert, but I have one of each with a bit of information on the flip:

England ca.1848 Propoganda "Model Penny" (and half penny) struck in Birmingham. Center is silver to make the bullion value equal to the regular penny.

I don't have the 19th century Krause or any other reference, so I have no clue as to values. I'll bet Wybrit knows, though image

Sorry I can't be of further help ... image

These aren't too difficult to find but aren't listed in Krause.

I've seen the scarcer pieces trade at close to $100 but the common ones trade at much less. They
    can occasionally be found cheap.

  • Model coin as descrbed by American Heritage Minting: "Some consider the Model Coins play money while others consider them patterns. they look like minaturized versions of regular coinage with the exception of the Young Head Pennies, Halfpennies and Gothic Crowns. The Young Head Pennies and Halfpennies have copper rings with white metal inserts and the Gothic Crowns have white metal rings with Brass inserts. Call Model Coins what you will, they are scarce."

I've seen the Model Penny without the ring and dated (most are undated) and Model Victoria Sovereigns on Ebay (made of brass I believe). There are also Edward VII model Farthings, Pennies, Crowns and Sovereigns and some Victoria Jubilee issues too. They are certainly worth collecting as they are unique and, as AHM says, scarce. Hope this helps....Bob
  • And on the 1/2 and 1 penny models the "insert" is not really an insert or silver. On worn specimens that I have seen the center area is actually the same copper as the outer ring and is just coated with a silver wash. (Silver was worn through on the bust and flaking off in the field.) On the proposed coinage it WAS to be a silver insert but they didn't go to that trouble on the model pieces.
