silver farthing 13th-14th century

I picked this coin up for $14 in Oxford, England on my honeymoon five years ago. I know that it is not in very good shape, but was wondering what you guys thought of it. Can anyone give me a grade and value? Thanks. -Dan

Sorry, I have no idea about that coin, but I'm sure many people here do, such as Ajaan or Aethelred or Python or Sylvestius, among others.

  • If it really is a medieval farthing (these would be much much smaller than even a US dime) than it's a good deal scarcer than the Edward I-III pennies. Also, I don't know if it's the scan, but the coin almost looks copper-ish-- but still definitely a 1200's-1300's (maybe 1400's)coin even if it's a contemporary forgery. Won't make you rich-- my guess is its value lies anywhere from $25-$50, but the history of these medieval British coins is worth that and more. Also kinda interesting-- and which also makes me wonder if its a medieval forgery-- the face on the king looks an awful lot like Bill Clilnton!

Thanks coachleonard. The coin is 12mm in size and is silver. The pic makes it look copper, but the real color is black. -Dan

Anyone know the grade for this coin?
  • Sorry i missed this.

It's an Edward I farthing of some description, CIVITAS LONDON.

Not sure what class, i don't think there is a way i could possibly tell from one in that condition. The condition is not good, it wouldn't grade G in my book and it bent too by the looks of it. Though still i think you did alright on that on.

I think it'd be AG with damage.

Most go for about £15/20 in VG so I think $14 is reasonable.

Thanks Sylvestius! I probably paid too much five years ago, but I wanted something of a souvenir from England. -Dan
