  • The thing that gets me is that it looks like they put it in a standard size holder. Look at the scan of the back, you can see the top 'lip' that holds the card in there, only it is 'clamping' the card itself. You can also see it from the front, just not as easy. Even if the card is real, it now has indentions on the top, on both sides. Crappy way to slab any card, much less THAT card even in poor condition.

  • Nobody with 0 feedback sells a real Mantle rookie. The seller doesn't allow one to come pick up the card and pay in person. The grader is obviously a joke by giving that card a grade of EX/5, since it would grade a PSA 1, even if it was real. Sadly, people are getting scammed on this card.

The seller has a 106 (154 total pos.) and the current high bidder has the 0 FB. I do agree with you that the card is most likely a fake as are most of the 311's sold on ebay.

grademycards.com ... was any grading "service" more accurately named?

If a real Mantle had been chewed up by a lawnmower, STILL no one would be dumb enough to send it to one of these sleazy slab merchants for "grading."

Somebody went to some effort to trash a perfectly nice reprint to perpetrate this fraud. And whoever ends up paying several thousand dollars for this poor-condition reprint will be a very unhappy camper in about a week (or longer if he tries to send it to PSA). Maybe he'll even come here asking what he can do about it.

You know, I have some '52 Mantle reprints that would grade 8 or 9. Logically, going by what transpires so frequently on eBay, I should clear about $20K each for them.

Most of the reprints I have seen are thinner than the regular cards. Im not sure how you could handle one of these and not tell it was a fake.

That card is one of a glut of new fakes that have recently surfaced on eBay which are essentially color copies of an authentic card, which is why they have the proper attributes of an authentic one. They are printed on rather thick cardstock also, a novice would easily be fooled. But, they are simple to tell from an authentic when handling them, the entire card is made up of half-tone print (tiny dots that look seamless to the naked eye), even the toning on the borders has been printed onto the card. Additionally, the cardstock, thick as it may be, is also translucent and passes direct light through it easily, where an authentic would completely block out the same direct light.
  • i'm so sick of people trying to game the system....i have absolutely no sympathy for these morons getting raped by fakes!

I love how the flip doesn't even say what the card is. It's just a grade and a barcode.

Grademycards.com will add the "Detailed grade" for $2.99 instead of the $1.99 for just the grade and bar code. If I had to bet I would say all the bar codes are the same.

If that's 5, then Gem Mint must be 500.

When you think about it, this might be a reprint graded 5, and it's just not labeled as such on the flip. Anyone with half a brain can figure out that this auction should be avoided like the plague. Also if you check out the website, check out their cool submission forms - they have a cute little turtle on them.

Here's some more cool stuff this guy has sold:

LeBron didn't look too sure of himself when signing that.

Even I can tell this is a reprint, even if it is "very nice" condition.

Looks like he's also been selling used printer cartridges advertised as new. Quality guy.

Good call on a reprint graded a 5. That would likely explain why he didn't spring for the extra $1 for a detailed slip.
