Proof Lincoln Registry: What's with the SMS coins?

A year or so ago, I noticed that the SMS coins are in the Varieties set, but not in the regular Proof set. For all other series, the SMS coins are included in both sets. What gives? I asked this question of Hall on the Q&A forum, but never got an answer.

One of the things about the registry that creates controversy is the composition of the sets, basic verses variety. Your specific question as to why the SMS Lincoln coins are in the variety proof set but not in the basic set could be expanded to say why NOT include all the fairly easily collectible Lincoln memorial proof cents in the basic set? Most of us consider them part of the Lincoln memorial proofs collection anyway. I mean the 1960 small date, the 1970 small date, the 1979 and 1981 type II's as well as the three SMS coins from 1965 thru 1967. THAT should be the basic set IMHO. As far as the varieties set, if we are going to include such things as the 1960 sd over ld and the 1960 ld over sd and ONLY one version of the 1971DD, then we are not getting all the Lincoln cent proof varieties into the registry! As you can see, my ideas may not be your ideas and that is what causes the controversy. I believe the varieties registry should be JUST for varieties and NOT include basic coins. but that too is JMHO. In this particular proof registry, I am torn where the 1990 no S belongs. Personally, I believe it should be in the basic set because it is a MAJOR recognized error coin, like the 1922 plain and the 1955 doubled die, but I also recognize that many people who collect the Lincoln Memorial proofs and want a complete registry, know they will probably have a slot missing and therefore don't want it in the basic set. A lot of rambling, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents here. Steve

I hear you Steve, and I agree with you.
However, the SMS coins are included in the basic proof set for nickels, dimes, and quarters, but not cents. If all denominations were consistent, I wouldn't have asked.

They are also included in the halves, so that leaves the Lincolns as the lone redheaded stepchild.
(Get it, "red" headed? )

Yes, we get it. But I think I have seen a Kennedy with red hair also.
