I really can't tell. The D is in a correct position for 1 of the 4 locations, but looks like it is the wrong type. I also have to ask why are there 3 pictures of the obverse and only 1 of the reverse??? The cleaning scares me too. One was to hide tool marks, soddering, or glue is to clean the coin. I don't buy the story of accidently forgetting the coin. This is one of the #1 counterfieted coins. Most 1916-D are AG/G coins or are UNC. Very few can be found in VF- EF. It is not unusual to find counterfeits in these grades.

He also has a 1918/7-S quarter he claims to have bought from a homeless man!!!! Hmmm, big stories to sell his coins.

  • I'm guessing it's cleaned with an added "D".

The "D" is too far away from the branch and the "D" looks too clean for my liking.

I'm no expert, but back in 1987, my dad got burned by an "added D" 1916 merc. My dad got burned for $270. He passed away two years later. I didn't find out about the dime until 2000 when it got BB'd on my first ever TPG submission (PCGS).

I could be wrong, but at the current bid of $3150, I have a sad feeling someone is going to be burned bigtime. image

I was unaware that there were 4 positions for the "D". image

looks like cleaned. and, as always, you have to ask; "why didn't someone certify a coin of this caliber and worth?" cheap to certify her, considering the gain. even just authenticate it, net grade. why not? something to hide, maybe?
  • I'm suprised he didn't find a '32D Washington stuck in the asphalt yet!!image

my gut feeling is that it's genuine. the digi-pic really sucks, but the position & shape of the m/m "looks right".

The picture is too fuzzy to tell the shape of the D. I've seen much sharper pictures. The coin is a big gamble if it is real or not.
