From your experience, whats the max % of coins valued $50 and up, eventually make it into plastic?

Coins are finite and the TPGs are all clicking along. At some point in future it would seem, a max % will be reached as there always remains the appeal of raw coins. Maybe even we are at it now?image

From my experience - zero. I've never sent a coin in for grading....yet.

despite the huge amounts of $$$ ($400,000,000, that's EIGHT ZEROS) poured into plastic co. coffers, the % of coins that are slabed is actually miniscule, even $50 & up.

incidentally, ZERO PERCENT of my coins are slabbed.

The supply of raw "classic" coins will slowly but surely dry up, as more and more of them get into holders with the "right" grade on them. (That means no shot at upgrading.)
The grading services need to constantly invent new ways to increase submissions. Fortunately, there are at least a couple of easy solutions to this problem.

    1) Relax your grading standards so that virtually all coins have to be cracked out and re-submitted for a higher grade.
    2) Start a "registry" program so that even 2004-P Lincoln pennies are suddenly worth slabbing.

Honestly, I can't blame them for doing these things- their jobs depend on it.

A bunch! Hows that for statistical elegance?

  • I think part of the appeal of grading has more to do with protection rather than grade, As Bower's has ponted out only 4 out of 100 1884CC morgans released in GSA plastic have been graded so far. There are a lot of low end coins, but I bet there's some MS-67's sitting around unknown and forgotten. I doubt any more than 5% ever get cracked out.
