Has anyone ever seen this?

I was checking auction previews for upcoming Heritage sales and ran across this lot. Heritage lot I was not aware that PCGS offered authentication and slabbing of coins without assigning a numerical grade. I thought ANACS and NCS were the only services that did this. Has anyone else ever seen this on a PCGS coin?

Has this specific coin been brought up as an example? I really do think they should holder these kind of coins, body bags are no fun.
Edited to add: What is the damage on the coin?

<< <i>I'd love to see PCGS do this on a regular basis........ I wish the concept of "bodybags" would stop......... After all, you pay your money for authentication, grading, AND holdering.......... If PCGS doesn't wish to assign a grade to a coin for whatever reason, (other than questionable authenticity), shouldn't you at least be able to get the coin at least holdered with a "GENUINE" designation???? Not to say that PCGS should follow ANACS into "net grading"........ Has this ever been asked on the Q & A forum?
Hear, hear
For this reason, it looks as if I will be sending my U.S. Type Set to ANACS because a couple of the older pieces are cleaned (a very long time ago, and since retoned) but at least with ANACS, my entire set will be in identical slabs.

I agree with others who said PCGS ought to holder coins that are genuine even if they are not gradable for whatever reason. They already grade some coins which would be bodybagged if the date started with "19" instead of "18" anyway, so what's the harm in certifying a coin as genuine and unaltered, and leaving it at that?
It's easy enough to do while avoiding the whole "net grading" thing.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>The gold nuggets weren't holdered by PCGS - they were holdered by Collectors Universe. A subtle, but distinct difference. >>
As were many of the 9-11 Trade Towers silver Eagles.
Although PCGS is owned by Collectors Universe (or, is it the other way around?) I believe the subtlety is lost on the Collector.

<< <i>I guess the difference between NGC holdering a coin and NCS holdering a coin is lost on the collector as well?
No, but be fair. You know the holders/shells used by Collectors Universe were the exact same (outside of the PCGS logo), even down to using the same color insert.
The NCS slab vs the NGC slab is different in color (one is clear, the other white); font used on the insert, and the color used.
I believe most that picked up the gold nuggets honestly thought it was PCGS (and, how close can you get?) that had holdered them.
FWIW: I have no problem with PCGS (Coin Universe) holdering either. I've been a proponent of PCGS holdering rare and damaged coins since the beginning. I just wish there was some type of consistency with their policy.
What gets holdered and what doesn't. I hope that is reasonable?

It was my understanding that the CU holders had gold foil inserts to differentiate them from PCGS. Isn't that true?
Usually the folks who are PCGS uber alles point to more conservative grading as the reason they insist on PCGS. Well, if a coin comes back with "no grade," as long as NCS and ANACS are just as reliable with authentication (and I've heard few claims to the contrary, it's always been about grading)...what's the problem and where's the issue? For a damaged coin like these, it's not about the grade assigned; it's all about the authentication which is every bit as good as PCGS authentication.

Actually like the "Death coins" they come from both companies.
Anyone for a PCGS slab with "Tooled" on the label?
<< <i>Anyone for a PCGS slab with "Tooled" on the label? >>
That one was an accidental holdering. The one in the auction was deliberate.

What Russ said... that one's got a bodybag label in a slab. There was a tooled large cent of the c-unt variety that accidently got slabbed, as well.
