Microscope opinions.

I purchased a stereo 10 power, 20 power microscope for the purpose of looking at my coins. Could have gotten the 30 power and 40 power and not sure if I got the right one.

What does everybody else use?

I've got a 10-30 power LW Scientific and love it!

I have a 10-30 LW Scientific too. I also bought the additional lens to swap it out to make it a 15-45 but the 30x is all I ever use.

  • What can you see on the 30 power that you can't see on the 20 power?

Shold I have gotten the 30 power?

Well, I like to hunt and (try to) attribute VAMs. VAMs often have die marks that are particular to a specific VAM, like the pattern of die polishing marks or a die scratch, gouge or chip. This is helpful when looking at a circulated coin that may have a bit of dirt & grime in the devices. 20x is plenty I would think, it's just this model of microscope came 10-30.

    Here's a sample view of my 30x:

  • Beautiful picture Jeff. I hope that was a find vs. a purchase.

I also have an LW Scientific but I got the magnification too strong in hindsight (20x & 40x).
  • I wish I could say this 1972 DDO was a find but I don't regret buying it. image

I recently looked through a large group of Lincoln cents under 30x. Its scary to see all of the crud that you miss with the naked eye. Yuck!!!!
