DGF what do you think?

This 1977 Topps #234 Nolan Ryan Record Breaker PSA 10, looks to have a blunted upper right corner, blunted lower left, and the upper left looks pretty rough to me, how does this get a PSA 10?

Looking for high grade rookie cards and unopened boxes/cases
  • I was under the impression that grading was an anonymous process - thus, the individuals grading the card didn't know what card belonged with what submitter.

In my opinion (tough to accurately determine from a scan), those edges/corners grade no better than an 8.

I hate to think that a card that bad could pass multiple (2) graders for a 10 (or a "special" for rushoeless).

    Just my opinion

  • The card appears to be quite colorful and that is hard to get on that particular issue. The card itself is butt-ugly, so I had no interest in that card besides a cert# for my set. This does appear to be a card with nice eye-appeal and worthy of MINT status. I have seen blunted corners on 77's receive high marks. Typically it relates to the stock quality (very soft, loose fibers). When the card is viewed up close you can see that the enamel is in-tact, but the corner doesn't come to a perfect point. I don't find those cards particularily desirable, but to each his own. The card appears as a possible cello card, but more likely (with that color) vending. Nice card I'm sure whoever Joe closed the auction for will be pleased.

Question for you: How hard am I gonna have to look to find a really high-end, clean, colorful '76 Ryan with no print debris?

It's amazing that Ryan broke that record in '76 then simply pitched another 17 seasons.

As for the scan/card, I think the contrast has been enhnnced to the point of me not knowing at all how nice the picture really is. Only thing I'd say comfortably is that it sure is well centered side to side.
  • DGF,

The Ryan's from 1976 set are usually plauged with that black ink spillage in the lower yellow area of the card, it can be tough to find one without it. I would say that 3/4 of the PSA 9 that I have seen have some
of that defect to varying degrees.

I've had 5 different PSA 9 76's and this is the best of those and the only one I have left.

It has just a touch of the black ink bleed, just below the pitcher icons foot. The others that I owned had
significantly more black ink speckling the that bottom yellow block.

The pink area in the picture looks horrible but the card has no issues in that area, its just artifacting from
having to reduce to scan to under 50k file size.

  • I find it amazing how much you guys specialize, and know the nuances of individual cards....especially of the 70's and 80's cards, that I find interesting!

I would still welcome the '77 card in question into my collection, even in a "7" or an "8" holder! (I'm not picky)

Could also be artifacts from the scan making the edges / corners a bit rough. If I remember correctly, I believe I bought from rushoeless before - nice guy - nice cards - no problems at all!
