TeleTrade and spyware-they suck! AdAware & Spybot does too and how spyware works and frigs your

Dog97Dog97 Posts: 7,874 ✭✭✭
I woke up about 2 am this morning & couldn’t sleep so I checked my email and there was a want list notification from TeleTrade so I was checking out some coins when all of a sudden my puter started running real sloooooooow and my firewall alerted me that a new program was trying to access the internet. I usually run my firewall tight so hardly any cookies get through and it stripes out all the annoying flashing banner ads that’s in the free email services and cuts out the dancing chickens and dancing babies and stupid music from idiot sleazeBay auctions. But that slows my puter down a little having to deal with all that so I run my firewall wide open when I want to look at a lot of pictures real fast.
Something called 180ax.exe was trying to get to the internet. Then another one & another. I’d deny it access than another one would try then the same ones would try again. I was getting ticked off because my computer is MY computer, I own it, I control it, nobody else uses it and nobody else has any business putting programs on it and using up space on MY harddrive accessing the internet using internet access that I pay for.
I ran AdAware. “Congratulation! No spyware found.” Yeah right. Then I ran Spybot. Found several tracking cookies but that’s not unusual. Nothing else. I’m really getting ticked now because my spyware software isn’t doing what it’s supposed to do.
I do start/run/msconfig/startup and there they are, 180ax, loads.exe, & jetmf are running. Only 9 programs run on startup on my puter so anything new is quickly noticed by me. I google each program, nothing, Must be new spyware and nobody is discussing them on the internet yet. It takes my puter about 3 minutes to work every time I click on google and something called Search Assistant tries to access the internet everytime I click on something. I’m on a fast DSL connection that usually makes access instantly. Not just my internet is slow, everything on desktop is in slow motion too. I’m really getting pissed off now and wished I had just stayed in bed and not looked at any coins on TeleTrade. So I start looking around in the Windows folder and see the new programs, about 9 different new files, 180ax.exe, MediaMotor25.exe, launchurl.exe, medload.exe and their associate log files. So I google those. Ah-ha! There’s a message board where they are discussing Media Motor so I check it out. They recommend AdAware SE Personal, which is a new version of the old outdated useless AdAware. I go to download.com to get the new version. My computer is so frigged up now it downloads but won’t install, even after uninstalling the old AdAware. Then I look in the log file of the spyware:

New log session started.

(Haha the spyware didn’t report anything on me)
new url : http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=MediaMotor25.exe&btnG=Google+Search
(That’s when I googled the spyware file name. It’s watching what I search for so it can give me related popups on my screen)
new url : http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?showtopic=18867
(That was the message board discussing spyware. See, it’s spying on me)
new url : http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button

new url : http://ads.com.com/mac-ad?CELT=ifc&SP=24&POS=100&NCAT=20:&CNET-SITE-ID=4&CNET-BRAND-ID=6
(Aint that nice! It’s configuring ads& popups for me on the AdAware download site!!)
00000000 duid empty - not continuing
00000000 Timer expired. Now(4154094746) Begin(4123335370)
config has web stuff to do but there's no connection
(Failure of the spyware to collect & report any useful information on me.)

AdAware won’t install and my puter is running like crap so I reboot. As it shuts down strange green stripe appears on the top of my screen & won’t go away (never seen that before) and my puter WON’T shut down.
I pull the plug on puter and restart it. Scandisk starts & crashes and puter freezes.
I pull the plug on puter again & restart it. Scandisks starts & crashes and puter freezes again.
I pull the plug again and same thing happens all over again.
I pull the plug again and Scandisks starts but keeps restarting so I cancel it and Windows loads. I have taskbar but no deskstop. I reboot puter and strange green stripe appears again and puter won’t shut down so I pull plug again.
I pull the plug again and Scandisks starts but keeps restarting so I cancel it and Windows loads this time but the spyware starts trying to access the internet and my firewall crashes.
I am really mad now and my eyes are bugging out of my head & I’m foaming at the mouth and something in my head is going “ping, ping, ping” and I’m saying “please God don’t let me have an aneurysm” cause I have high blood pressure anyway. I restart. It restarts properly this time but firewall crashes again.
I restart. It restarts properly this time and firewall loads properly but goes crazy with alerts from 3 different programs trying to access the internet.
I install the new AdAware and it installs properly but wants to update but my puter & internet is still running like slow motion dog crap and it won’t update.
Ran AdAware, it took about 5 minutes and it detects 153 spyware files and registry keys.
Click the delete button to delete spyware and AdAware promptly crashes and puter freezes. 3 finger ctrl/alt/del and puter goes beeeeep but nothing happens. Puter says beeeeeep.
I pull the plug on puter again & restart it. Scandisks starts & crashes and puter freezes again.
I pull the plug again and same thing happens all over again.
I pull the plug again and Scandisks starts but keeps restarting so I cancel it and Windows loads and everything is fine.
Well then I’ll do it the old fashioned way. Start/settings/control panel/remove programs. Only one spyware program is listed and I uninstall it. Get message saying to reboot to make uninstall complete. NO WAY in hell am I going to reboot again. Not right now anyway. Go to windows folder right click and arrange by date and delete everything created an hour ago.
Use a deleter program to delete the registry keys.
Run AdAware again. Takes 5 minutes again. Detects 109 spyware files and deletes then with no problem this time.
Reboot computer. No problems.
AdAware updates.
Run AdAware another 5 minutes and it detects 42 more spyware files that the un-updated version didn’t detect. Delete those.
Dump recycle bin, cookies, temp internet files, & cache run scandisk & defrag and reboot and everything is fine. Puter hasn’t ran this good in months.
Took 2 hours to fix it.
I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO DO THIS!!! ADVERTISING COMPANIES HAVE NO BUSINESS FRIGGING WITH MY COMPUTER!!

But AdAware is old and useless you have to have the new version AdAware SE Personal. I’ve used many spyware programs and so far it is the best. I am really disappointed in Spybot because it didn’t detect any files and gives you a false sense of security.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

Try spy sweeper you gotta pay for it but it catches stuff trying to sneak in as opposed to adaware and spybot which you have to run to find stuff thats already there.

    Thanks for the info.

If I look at startup in msconfig, how do I know what's crap and what needs to stay? I've always wondered about that...
  • For those of you who are not aware, if you return a coin to Teletrade you WILL incur a “restock” fee along with other fees they see fit no matter how many coins you’ve bought from them in the past. I personally lost over $ 50.00 returning a $ 850 coin after I didn’t agree with the coin’s description. Frankly, it wasn’t even close to the description. Good luck with your purchase..........
  • A suggestion, when you run Spybot, immunize your system too... I swear, it helps a lot... it prevents known spyware from infesting your computer, it also disables ActiveX, which is how a lot of crap gets onto your computer... I did that, and now, mostly all I deal with, is tracking cookiees...

    Dog,

Was the program placed by Teletrade or attached to their email as a spider in infectware?

Peaceman, while I understand you are upset about your issue with TT it does not give you the right to constantly disparage them on an open forum. We have had nothing but good experiences with TT over the past two years both in buying, selling and even returning coins. PM me and I will send you the email for Paul Song, VP sales....I am sure you two can work something out privately.

  • It's a feeling of being violated and hopefully Congress will pass some new legislature to punish these idiots. If you mess with somebodies mail it is a federal offense, but all day long you can fry their computer. I had similiar problems on a computer at work and after installing ad-aware, spybot s&d, Ie-spyad host file, I finally had to go to various online scanners such as trendmicro, panda, trojanscan.com, & Housecall. One may have an update that the other didn't have. It's a pain that you have to waste your time cleaning your computer instead of enjoying the internet.
I dont know which anti-spyware forum you went to but if you continue to have problems you can download HJT and post a log in http//forums.spywareinfo.com but they are usually backed up about 3 days. Here's a link to the tutorial to look at it yourself. Goodluck.

The bad thing about it is that I'm no computer expert. I just know the basics of how my computer works. I'm redneck country boy that drives pickups & builds houses for a living.
It makes me wonder with all the people that don't have a clue as to what a firewall is and don't even use one. Hell there's people on this board that don't even know how to post a picture so what they do when their computer gets infested and won't work right and they wonder why it runs slow or crashes all the time. Do something you think would be completely safe & innoncent like looking at coins and you get completely frigged up.
That is WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!! People should be able to use & enjoy the internet without being subject to crap that damages their computer.

    XpipedreamR-
That's the tough part. You have to know what the programs do. Most of them are just BS accessory stuff that clogs your system and you don't need them running all the time. Windows loads about 20-30 of them at startup and you only need about 2 or 3.
Whatever programs you use but don't need running all the time just right click on thier icon in the taskbar and uncheck the "run at startup" option.
That will get rid of a lot of wasted resources.
There will still be stuff running and you won't have a clue as to what it does and you have to research it yourself. There are computer sites that list & explain them Here's one but if you're not sure what a program does then DON'T MESS WITH IT or your puter might just quit working then you will have to startup in safe mode and enable the programs again.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I'm with you, Dog. I say we hunt down the scumbags that put this stuff out
there and make them feel our collective pain in a very real way.

  • Dog, (and others) I have SpyBot, AdAware SE, and Bazooka ( this is a program for some hardened spyware, which can only be removed manually, but it is a good detector.) and the only one I found that traced AND cleaned is SpywareBegone (www.spywarebegone.com) You have to buy the full version in order to clean, but the free version will find everything on your 'puter. Best damned $30 I EVER spent on software!!!!! image It was the ONLY one that found a spyware and CLEANED it that spybot, Adaware, and even Bazooka could not find nor clean. IMHO, this is the spyware killer primo!!!!! image

  • TBT...

What's wrong.... ? I'm just stating a simple fact..... If he'd like to contact me and give me a refund I have no problem with that.... Even if he gave me back the $.... I'd STILL never ever ever ever buy a coin on TT ever again....... ever.... (did I say EVER)..... O, I DID.... good....... so he might as well keep his $..... He's not going to win in this situation.... I really don't care how nice the guy is.....I was polite to him when I called and he told me "sorry..."

Their return policy is going to really hurt him until he, they, whomever changes it... hopefully by then he'll realise how much business he's lost because of it and what a bad business decision it was for TT to ever enforce it. Fine, charge shipping and $10 or $ 15.... that's fair.... I do not think "the customer is always right" fits his line of thinking......... What about the cost for me to send it back to him..... I'm really out $65......

And you'll see this post EVERY SINGLE TIME TT is mentioned on this board..... until I think I got my $'s worth..... Heck, I could just dispute the CC charge if I really wanted to...... but I'm letting it go..... really...... Hope he spends it on a nice steak dinner on me..... He deserves it..... I bet he's already seeing sales going down and is wondering why....... image

I had to wipe my entire HD off cause it was threaded so bad I couldnt get it out. When my booted up my comp, it froze on the windows screen. I opened in safe mode to try to get rid of stuff that was locking me up......no go.....Had to take it to the PC doc. They wiped it and reloaded all of hardware drivers and some of my guitar solos( Thank god I didn't lose those because these are the only files I have of them). My comp runs better then ever now. Teletrade cost me 117.00 and I didn't get to buy anything yet!

I believe the program saves what it removes until you delete the quarantine file. If you have WinXP, delete previous system restore points after your computer is really clean. If you don't then the bad stuff is still there. Just remember to create a new restore point. And all of temp files and cookies image

  • CCR, I have Ad-Aware SE loaded on my system, and it does a better job than Spybot, but I have had greater success with Spywarebegone's ability to clean and stop spyware before it has a chance to mess my system up. It loads on system startup and checks your registry and then runs in the background, looking for any changes in registry settings. I know for a lot of people $30 may seem much for the software, but then if your sytem gets trashed what does it cost you to have a local tech look at it? most likely just to take it in somewhere is going to be $40. • I'd think twice before trashing AdAware or Spybot until I knew how to use them properly. There is no more effective set up than AdAware and Zone Alarm freeware programs to protect your system. I've used both for years without problem. AdAware should be run a kinimum of once a week AFTER you do their FREE update. You cannot just install it and then run it once in a while. There is an Update button on their program window and its reference file usually updated a minimu of once a week. Use it. AdAware will find most of these programs, and allow you to remove them. Zone Alarm will prevent them from getting onto your PC in the first place. Zone Alarm has an automatic update function that will keep your copy up to date. No software is 100% effective as things chage too quickly on the internet. Being prudent on where you browse and what you run when your on line is the third factor in helping you to keep a clean, infection free PC.

AdAware is trash & needs to be trashed. Noticed I commented favorably on the new AdAware Personal SE. As far as your ?? about deleting the quarantine you don't need to quarantee anything unless you have doubts as to what it really is. Internet Explorer browser comes with Alexa installed, and you might want to keep Alexa for example. Otherwise delete whatever it finds.
I know how to use Spybot. It missed too many spywares on my puter for me to speak favorably about it.
I do use Zone Alarm, the pro version. I like it but like I said I had turned off the js, ad, & cookie control to surf a lot of pictures faster and that's when the junk got me.
