Need some coin advice

I received a 1967 coin set from my father when I was born and I would like to buy my son a 2004 set for him. I know baseball cards, but nothing about this. My set has a penny thru half dollar, and it is in a plastic holder. It came in a blue box. I would like to get something similiar.

Thanks in advance fellas.

Please send a PM if you can help me out. Take care.

  • Sounds like you were given a "SMS" (Special Mint Set) which was a set designated to take the place of proof coins in 65-66-67........
If you wish to get something similar for your son, check out "annual coin sets" at www.usmint.gov

  • You probably would want the 2004 Silver Proof Set. It's available from the U.S. Mint, you can order it online and have it shipped to you, and they cost around $38.

  • Hello,

First off, the 1967 set that you got from your father is called a Special Mint Set. They were made in 1965, 1966 and 1967 only and the mint did not make any other mint or proof sets. If you want to buy something for your son, you will have to decide what you want first. Therefore, I would suggest that you log on to www.usmint.gov and look at what the mint offers for 2004. There are mint sets, which contain 11 coins each from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. There are also both Clad and Silver proof sets from the San Fransisco Mint which contain 11 coins in proof condition.

You will be able to purchase these items on line if you wish or many forum members can supply you with what you want. Any coin shop will also have these items.image

    Happy shopping

If you want something akin to the "plastic holder" coins, you want a "proof" set, which contains "proof" coins in a solid plastic case, as opposed to a "mint" set, which contains regular coins that arrive in pliable plastic pouches.
