Auction Companies that Play Games

I'm pretty po'd at a description in the Richmond Collection. Specifically, a quote from the description of the 1871-CC Seated Dollar (NGC-MS64): "this coin is likely the same specimen that is listed in the PCGS Population Report as MS64 (of this we are not absolutely certain, but it appears likely)."

No way in hell - that is misleading and they know it! The coin in question is the Norweb specimen and was graded PCGS MS63 when it sold in auction a few years ago. I'm told that it was resubmitted by David Lawrence on behalf of the consignor to NGC where it upgraded to MS64. I even pointed out to them nicely [in a prior thread] that they had it listed on their website as an MS63. The PCGS MS64 is the James A Stack specimen and is in my set.

I don't mind the upgrade game so much as an auction company that [intentionally?] misleads potential buyers. GRRRR!

Was wonderinhg about that - got my catalog today and read about that coin. It would appear they know it's an incorrect description, which is disappointing.

TDN, call me a dreamer, but I would like to think it was an honest mistake and that perhaps the catalouger was unaware of the information you had at your disposal?
  • I'd describe that as somewhere between irresponsible and outrageous.

At best, it's one half of the company not knowing what the other half knows. At worst....

They know the coin just went up. So did 2 of the 3 other CC's. I look forward to seeing their descriptions.

I think it's an honest mistake. Let's tell the truth, most auction cataloguers can't compete with specialists on specific coins (which is not to say that they do not have a very strong general knowledge overall).

Besides, why WOULDN'T you want the value of coins similar to yours pumped up image

for some reason most of the coins in the sale are in NGC plastic - not sure what the wisdom of that move was - but there alot smarter people out there than I image

nice catalog though - I guess the effort shows - sorry tdn ...hope you figure it out - good luck !
