I'm moving, what should I do with my collection?

Okay, who has moved, and what did you do with your collection? Give me some options?

We are moving in a few weeks, and I do not want to put my collection in mini-storage. Too risky of a break-in, since one of our 2 mini-storage units was already broken into 2 weeks ago. Can't bring everything to the bank (ie: safe deposit boxes). But we need to be out on a Monday, and can't start moving in until the Wednesday.

Do I trust a friend with it? Any ideas?

  • put what you can in safe deposit box, the rest in food boxes that look like cereal or whatever, and put in a plastic air tite storage box and pile everything on top of it in the storage bin. Put in on the very bottom underneath a LOT of heavy stuff. Or ask a relative to watch it for you. Mail some of it to yourself to be held at post office - insured of course.

ps. Oh, just saw you were broken into - yes trust to a friend.

When I moved to Guam from Texas, I had the same problem. I had a pickup truck with a cap on the back. we filled the truck with boxes including 3 boxes of coins and locked it. The truck was put in a container and shipped by boat. On the move back, I did not hav the truck anymore but had a Toyota Corrola. I had a key which fit only the ignition (as you have to give the shipper a key). I disconnected the remote trunk unlock cable and into the container it went........all arrived safely both ways............By the way, I guess the container could have been called a cointainer.............good luck

The best option is to put them in a safty deposit box.

  • If you moving a short distance, you should think about moving it yourself, If it is long distance and you are using respected moving comapny, all you have to is declare it and get insurance. Just my humble opinion.
    Good luck

Moving back from Japan, I didn't quite trust the military movers. I sent my coins and other irreplaceables back via registered/insured mail without any trouble or losses. Definitely worth it, though I didn't have any losses from the movers either. Good luck with your move!
