Set Registry Etiquette

Hi Everyone,

I would like to remind you about two issues:

1. You must own and have possession of any card you list in the Registry. This means that you should not attempt to add a card to your set that you do not have in your hand. We are getting a large number of people trying to add cards which they do not own. When you do this, an email is automatically sent to the owner asking him/her to release his/her card. In some cases, this has caused alarm. Please, DO NOT attempt to add any card to a set, regardless if the set is validated or not, if you do not own & have possession of the card.

If you are interested in seeing how the addition of a card will change your GPA/Rating, email me directly and I'll send you a spreadsheet which will automatically calculate changes you make.

2. Delete your sold cards! You cannot imagine how many emails come through every day from people who cannot add cards to their set because the previous owner had not bothered to remove the card from his/her set after it has been sold. Please keep your sets updated!

There are no fees to participate in the Registry. All that we ask is that you abide these very simple rules. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!

It otta be easy to do, but this may be akin to asking farm animals to behave at the dinner table......

Question: You said one must have their card in hand. If I purchase a card on ebay, can I add it to my set before I actually receive it in the mail? Afterall, at that point I do own the card.

Now who is lawyering? Everything is a technicality.

Until you have the card in hand, you may never get it.

I have purchased PSA cards that never arrived, that arrived with a damaged holder and were no longer in the stated grade, or that were not the advertised grade.

In each of those cases, if I listed the card, I would be inflating my registry spot over what it should be.

Nick M's evil twin would like to add one thought:

once I purchase a card on eBay, and enter the cert number into my Registry set, that is (somewhat of) a deterrant to the card's theft. Because if that card is stolen, and the new "owner" attempts to add it to a PSA Registry set, the sirens will go off once I receive one of BJ's emails.

  • I agree with SOM.

  • I agree with NickM; it's not yours until you actually receive it. I have had a few issues with buying cards on eBay, yet having the Post Office lose them in transit. This isn't a new rule, so just abide by the rules. As far as people stealing card numbers and trying to register them, as long as you keep documentation showing the transaction of you purchasing a card, that should be sufficient. There will always be some unethical people out there, but this is an honor system, and I'd like to hope we're all capable of self-policing this without putting too much burden on BJ and her staff.

What a shame that this even has to be mentioned. The Registry should be fun, some people take "winning" too seriously. I would suggest that the individual who recently used cert numbers that he didn't own, in order to try and win a Registry award, and then deleted those certs when he was caught - should be banned from participating any further.

  • Im not all into "winning" I would just like to have the best graded set.

the reg should be used as a sort of checklist.
banning that guy is a lil harsh though imo.
    what exactly does one win?

    Good for you.

I have people trying to add my 1972 Football cards into their sets all the time.

Here is the most recent attempt:

Dear Set Registrant: Another member is attempting to add the following certification number to his/her set: 30642568 1972 TOPPS DAVE PARKS 14 (Football:1972 Topps-Carlos D. Aponte's 1972 Topps Football Set) Assuming that you no longer own this item, please remove it from your set(s) and validate your set(s) as soon as possible. Click here to login and delete the item from your set(s). If you still own this item, please contact Set Registry Customer Service immediately. Thank you. Set Registry Customer Service

The first time this happened I almost freaked. I emailed Gail and she told me not to worry. She also mentioned that sometime this week, they will be able to identify who is trying to swipe my card. Currently the system does not allow them to do so.

Just so you all know, we now know who is attempting to add cards from other people's set. In each case, the member has been emailed. In some cases it has been innocent. The member is just experimenting. In some cases, it's malicious. In a very few cases, we have found duplicate certification numbers. I predict that as word of our new recording system spreads, fewer and fewer people will be experimenting where they shouldn't be.

    Great News BJ...

So can you tell me who keeps trying to add my cards to their set?????

    Carlos
  • Is this new recording system the reason it is almost impossible to get cards added even if you have them in hand. I just had about 6 or 7 cards denied that are definately in the registry because it says it doesn't have a specific cert. # or something. Poor Cossetta or whatever her name is is getting sick of me sending her e-mails with pictures of Kevin Garnett cards so I can get them added. She's gonna be an expert on KG cards because she see's them on a daily basis. I'm getting sick of scanning cards everyday and mailing it off and having to wait three days. AGHH, frustrating! Will this ever be fixed, because if it will soon I will just hold off on entering them.image
