I was trying to deceide which 10 I would pick to match the recently uploaded baseball set, and honestly I don't think there are 10 that would qualify. Of course none match the stature of the baseball cards. I would include:
1888 N162 Beecher
1894 Mayo Anonymous
1935 National Chicle Nagurski
1952 Bowman Large Lansford
1965 Topps Namath
Those would definitely make the list. Now, for the balance, my personal opinion is:
1933 Sport Kings Thorpe
1933 Sport Kings Grange
1950 Topps Felt Backs Paterno
1955 Topps Four Horsemen
1958 Topps Brown.
Thoughts?

Seems like it would depend on what type of list we're trying to put together.
Are we trying to compile a list of the 10 all-time most EXPENSIVE and RARE football cards ?
Nothing wrong with that,
but it would look a heck of a lot different than a set of the all-time 10 BEST football players.
According to an ESPN panel of experts the list would be :
1 - Jim Brown
2 - Jerry Rice
3 - Joe Montana
4 - Walter Payton
5 - Lawrence Taylor
6 - Johnny Unitas
7 - John Elway
8 - Dick Butkus
9 - Reggie White
tied 10 - Sammy Baugh
tied 10 - Deacon Jones
Hmmm ... not too many really old cards on that list.
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
It's hard to argue with ESPN's list, although personally I'd put Rice #1, just because of longevity. I think Barry Sanders belongs on the list too, but I'll be damned if I can figure out who to remove

I'd put Jerry Rice at # 1 too.
Not only because of his longevity,
but I think the level of competition was higher when he played.
As for Marino,
I think if he'd won even ONE superbowl, he'd be in the top 5.
Just goes to show how much emphasis is placed on winning championships.
By the way, here's ESPN's # 11 thru # 20 :
11 - Anthony Munoz
12 - Jack Lambert
13 - Dan Marino
14 - Jim Parker
15 - Dick "Night Train" Lane
16 - Ray Lewis
17 - Mel Blount
18 - Barry Sanders
19 - Mike Webster
20 - Rod Woodson

1948 leaf sammy baugh....tough to find, and VERY nice to look at.
1951 bowman tom landry psa 9 or 10.
1935 nagurski
1933?? sporting kings grange
1888 N162 Beecher
1894 Mayo Anonymous
1952 lansford, or 1952 landry large
...after those, i think there's a huge drop in greatness of desirability, rarity, and aesthetic appeal.
...it's also important to note, it's far more difficult to do a top ten football list than it is for baseball. not only are there far fewer choices, but it's much more difficult to find vintage football cards than it is to find baseball....and debatably there was more baseball produced and still in existence.
