I see that some of you are including modern cards on your lists. I'm impressed with the diversity.

I'm just gonna pick some random ones - if I could have ANY 10 cards:

    T206 Honus Wagner
    1915 Cracker Jack Frank Baker
    1919 ZeeNut Fatty Arbuckle
    1952 Topps Mantle
    1968 Topps Venezuelan Nolan Ryan
1970 Topps Cloth Sticker Nolan Ryan
    1972 Venezuelan Nolan Ryan Sticker
1974 Topps Deckle Edge Nolan Ryan
    1988 Topps Nolan Ryan
    1993 Finest Refractor Nolan Ryan

So I guess it's my top 4, and then some Ryans. And if we ever decide that a 1968 Milton Bradley variation exists, thenI'll plug that in for the Wagner. But NOT the precious 1988 Topps - my favorite of all time.

Will, I can make your dreams of Lyman Bostock come true.

    1977 Bostock

  • Such a cool thread, I couldn't help but chime in. My top ten favorite cards, in chronological order:

    1. T206 Rube Waddell portrait
    2. 1938 Goudey #273 Jimmy Foxx
    3. 1953 Bowman Color Pee Wee Reese
    4. 1953 Topps Jackie Robinson
    5. 1957 Topps Roberto Clemente
    6. 1957 Topps Ernie Banks
    7. 1961 Topps #300 Mickey Mantle
    8. 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan
    9. 1977 Topps Rod Carew
    10. 1977 Topps Carlton Fisk

I like these because of what they represent to me. When I was a kid, I collected vintage cards. In 1991 when I got married, I had no job and no money - so I gradually started dipping into my old cards and selling them. Finally, I was at the point where I was so far in debt that I was going to go bankrupt - so I took a huge binder of great vintage stuff to a card show, and got taken advantage of by a dealer who bought the whole thing from me for $400. Probably worth $20,000 today.

The last two come from the first set I collected as a kid.

  • Al,

Thanks for sharing. I can't disagree with you. That's a nice list, and to be able to check them all off would be a major accomplishment for many collectors.

  • JEB:

Wow, that's a great Carew. What a beautiful card.

Mine comes from the first pack of baseball cards I ever bought, back in 1977. I opened it inside a grocery store. I remember pulling the Carew out of the pack and from that point on, I was hooked.

I still have it, and it's the only '77 Carew I have. Over the years it has been, umm, "handled", but I'll still never replace it. It's the only '77 Carew I'll ever own.
