Colin is refering to the nail- like marks on the usually blank side of cash coins. If memory serves this practice started in the Tang dynasty. I am too lazy to get out my references.

I don't have any pictures and I can't find much on the web. But they are thin crescent shapes on the blank sides of cash coins.
