What's a collection of world coins one can put together in mint state or proof?

Without spending too much money.

Some of the Caribbean nations make lots of nice proofs that are readily available.
  • I just finished off a set of British 1/2ds from 1937-1970. The set includes an unc for each year and 5 proofs ('37, '50, '51,'53,'70). Those were done for less than $125. It's a fun and very attractive set.

Canadian silver dollars from Elizabeth II are fairly inexpensive in UNC and proof, unless you collect varieties and special edition proofs.

Free State Irish, pre-decimal, all denominations. There's only one really expensive coin in the series, the 43 florin. Without that coin, you can build a really nice set for a couple grand. Although that may sound like a lot of money, you don't have to buy all of the coins tomorrow.

    Advantages:

    The designs are fun.

You can buy albums for the sets.

Gems are really difficult to find, but not all that expensive. You'll find some condition rarities in your travels and they won't set you back all that much.

The recently obsolete European coins are mostly quite inexpensive in unc, but
most simply can't be found and if they are found are likely to cost more than cat-
alog. But some of these are not extremely difficult. The minor French issues are
available and some others. There is still not much interest in these so they may
    get much more difficult.

Also look at the late Swiss coins. These are actually available and are attractive
coins. Watch for the mint sets as the coins in them are of outstanding quality.

  • A denomination set of Peruvian coins can be put together for well under $100.00 This would include coins from the late1800`s and early 1900`s including some varieties, errors and some prooflike specimens. 1/2 ,1 dineros,1/5,1/2,and 1 sols and centavos.

  • FAO coins. Cheap, a variety of almost unheard countries, interesting designs, metals, shapes and you can buy yearly albums, often sold complete on ebay.
