Anyone know the mintage on a 1797 Proof Large Penny?

I don't know if anyone knows this. I'm sure the Royal Mint doesn't know, they couldn't even give me the mintage of a 1958 1/2d. I have seen quite a few for sale in the past few years. As you probably know, they were minted Gilted also.

What would you guess approximate? 100? 200?

I would guess in that range, 150-200 but that would only be a guess including patterns.

200 might be high. Maybe 100-150. I'm interested to find out.

  • The Royal Mint wouldn't know, they didn't make them. You might find some information in the British version of the national archives in the Matthew Boulton papers boxes. Richard Doty of the Smithonian has done a lot of research through the Boulton papers so he might know.
  • My guess is there must have been quite a few, as there is the Proof, the Bronzed Proof, the Gilt Proof, the Silvered Proof, the Proof in Tin, the Proof in Silver, the Proof in Silver on a thin Flan, and the Proof in Gold.
