Looks open. As far as the second question, I don't know...but even if it's a listed die variety I doubt it would be worth a premium on the neck -- though I'm curious about the mark to the left of the necklace.
  • Definitely open. Nice solid G-4 - very clean and even wear.

Don't know about the the raised bump or the spot in front of the necklace. Need to get Shylock in here for the varieties.

It's a Snow 7 (open 3) MPD on the neck. Here's a cleaned MS example:

We could keep the thread going with this question: is it an MPD or just a huge die lump? I still had the image in my files from a post I made about it last year. I think Rick lists it as a misplaced date but it's tough to match it up to any of the numerals.

Thanks for your responses, esp Shylock, so let me ask you, is there any premium associated with a Snow-7?

Difficult to tell if it's a misplaced date (the numeral 1? the 7?) or just a die gouge,
maybe the guy punching in the date just slipped and nicked the neck with the punch?
(it doesn't look like it could be the 8 or the 3, not "curvy" enough)

I grade this coin Good-6 and it cost me $20. good deal?

For what it's worth, I agree with G-6 as the grade.

Baley - I don't think this variety carries much of a premium, especially in lower grades. I'll leave it to someone who knows circ IH prices better than me to comment on the price. $20 for a very clean G example of a tougher date sounds reasonable to me.

It does look like the top of the "1" punch could have created this if it struck at an angle. It should be called the Frankenstein variety image

Here's mine, I always thought it was a die chip.
Closeup it doesn't look like a digit.
    Check out the scans.

Excellent example Smittys, much more original than mine. I was hoping Rick would reply to this post (hint).
