How do you tell if you have the worst graded PCGS coin?

BigEBigE Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭
The pop reports don't go low enough and group VG-VF and lower all in one category. Do you have to create a registry set to find out how many are less?---------------BigE

Even if you create a Registry set, you can only find out how many others are of the same grade or higher. I don't think there is any way to answer your question.

I've even tried calling PCGS Customer Service - w/o any luck. I, and others, have posed this question to David Hall and he's replied that they will essentially get to it someday when there's times.......course, that was almost a year ago!

You can tell if you have the worst if Braddick is offering you $1500 for it.

One sure way to be certain:

If you have a coin graded Poor-01, you know there's nothing lower.

Pop that puppy into your Registry set and if it shows up as a pop 1 coin, then you know you've got THE worst one. (I've got two different dates with this distinction! -- 1886-P Morgan and 1895-S Morgan.)
    When in doubt, don't.

    I've got about 40 pop 0/1's (pop 1 with nothing lower)......mostly PO01's but a few FR02's also. Here's a 1794 Large Cent, Head of 1793 in PO01, pop 1/49:

    Craig:

Regarding your Fair-02s being the lowest... how do you know there aren't any Poor-01s that have been graded?

By the way, that 1794 is nice!!

  • Craig,

Nice cent! Bet you get some pm's for that beauty.

It doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult at all to break down the lower grades individually, you would think?

Other than what Dennis said about it having to be a pop 0/1 PO01, I don't know any other way you can tell.

BigE my man, How's it been?

Guys, I will admit it does take some detective work.....and here's an example. I have a FR02 and its in my registry set where it shows pop 3/75. So I know there are 78 pieces graded FR02-MS70.....what I don't know is if there are any PO01's. Well, just so happens I have my hard copy PCGS pop report and value guide and as of early October, there were only 78 coins graded in ALL grades (note the Registry 78 pieces = the hard copy 78 pieces). So unless someone made one in the last month or two, there aren't any PO01's for this coin.

Not perfect by any means but hey, when you're working in the dark with low grade coin pop's, even a smoldering match stickseems like a lot of light!

    Here's one of my favorite PO01's.....a 1797 Bust $1 small Eagle 9x7 stars (and a pop 0/1):

dork, I meant to say "lowest" graded. Do you think if I cleaned out her ear hole on this liberty nickel (since it is the only thing clearly visible on the obverse) that it might grade a little lower?image-----------------------BigE
