Back from PSA: Some Benches you don't see every day

A couple of sorta unusual Bench hand-cuts I have requested for the master set; they're both the only ones graded so far. Below are a couple more Benches not commonly seen, though they are in the set. Milton Bradley game card, only 8 in all grades. 1981 OPC, only 3 graded, this is the highest. Not sure why it's #286 while the Topps version is #600.

Great cards, Jrdolan - thanks for sharing!

One question for you - do you (or anyone else out there) have any good, sensible way to differentiate between the 1969 and the 1972 Milton Bradley cards? I've read what they have to say in the Standard Catalog - and it makes absolutely no sense to me.

    Marc,

Not sure how Standard Catalog phrases it, but here is the only way to tell:

    (1) Turn card over
    (2) Find one of the stat lines that is highlighted in red
    (3) If card has a "1" in the line, look at the base of the "1"
    (4) If the "1" is printed in a "san serif" font, meaning there is no "base" to the "1", the card is from 1969.
    (5) If the "1" is printed in a "serif" font, the card is from 1972.

Here is a scan showing a 1969 Milton Bradley on the left and a mocked-up 1972 Milton Bradley on the right.

Next to each red "1", I have created an enlarged "1" showing the different bases. NOTE: The "1"s printed in black use a "serif" font for both years (as you can see in the scan). You have to find a "1" that is highlighted in red.

    Hope this helps.

  • John- Very nice results! Any idea why the MB came out a 6? Looks better than that to me, but sometimes it's hard to tell just from a scan.

Well, some of the corners have little tufts or bat ears on them, but that's where they were detached from the sheet. I guess PSA thought they should have been detached more cleanly? I dunno. I didn't think I should "clean up" the corners.

Think that's harsh grading? In the same submission I got back a '69 MLB Photostamp and a '69 Topps Stamp, both graded 5. I couldn't find anything wrong with 'em before I sent them in, and I can't find anything wrong with 'em now. I'm a little steamed about that, but I got a bunch of other Bench oddball stuff back with grades I am quite pleased with -- or at least OK with.
  • Thanks John for the scans......you certainly have an awesome Bench collection going!
