1858/7 FE saga Heartbreaking ending to the story

Well ANACS sent back my Flying Eagle cent and although I thought it was a 1858/7 variety.
ANACS just considered it a 1858 LL variety. Big bummer, embarrasing and heartbreaking too.image
They did say I did a great job filling out and preparing the form though.
Previous link from a while back.
Too bad it couldn't have been graded worse, it would make a better conversation piece.image

Bummed and heartbroken maybe, but I sure would'nt be embarrassed. You had the worlds leading expert on FE cents say that it looked like an 1858/7. Maybe ANACS got it wrong?

Still, a couple of people in that thread thought it wasn't an 8/7, myself included, and every opinion was hedged on the fact that we were attributing from a scan. Even the experts blow an attribution once in a while, especially without the coin in hand. Heck, not to call myself an "expert," but go back to that thread and look at Craton's clipped 8/7 - I've specialized in clips for eight years, but when he bought it, I told him (from the picture) the coin was damaged. image I also could have bought it from him for $20 before anyone recognized it as an overdate. image ANACS had your coin in hand and 20-some-odd years of experience at their disposal, so I'd take their opinion as the last word on the attribution.

All that said, there's absolutely no reason to be embarrassed. You made a reasonable gamble on this coin, it just didn't work out in your favor this time. I just hope for your sake that your 'numismatic tuition' payment wasn't too steep - any chance you have some recourse with the dealer who sold you the coin?

    I purchased it as is.

Anyway, it shure looked good while it did.
    At least it wasn't a raw 1856.image

After I get over the shock, who knows maybe a contest give away or something?

On more than one ocassion ANACS has reversed their attribution on a 1858/7 S-1 with a letter by me, but I'd have to see it in person to give to a letter. Costs $4 plus return postage.

    Send Rick the coin.

Besides being one of the nicest and most upstanding guys in the coin world, he's actually THE last word when it comes to Indian and F.E. cents.
    When in doubt, don't.

Sounds like a plan to me. I think I should have probably sent it to you in the first place.image
