Peace VAM Question -- 34-D VAM-4 Rarity/Price?

I found 6 of these in a half roll I just purchased. Most are 62/63. Maybe 1 is a 64.

I couldn't find 1 example sold in the auction archives @ Heritage. So I have no idea of how rare these really are.

VamLink indicates this is ultra-rare. What kinda of premium would a 34-D VAM-4 (microD) bring?

Here's a pic of the best one ---

  • According to the Top 50 Peace Dollar book, the 1934-D v4 is

<< <i>considered to be the most desirable variety in the entire Top 50 >>

. WIth the micro D mintmark, you should also see doubling on the obverse profile, particularly the lips. The values are:

    MS60 - 500-550
    MS62 - 600-650
    MS63 - 750-850
    MS64 - 1000-1250

Another quote from the book calls this vam the "VAM 44" of the Peace Dollar series.

It looks like you hit paydirt!

    Congratulations!

  • O, Here's the post...... image. First, the coin has to have this kind of doubling to be considered a VAM 3 or VAM 4
    image
Check very closely.... there are coins out there WITHOUT these characteristics..... they're just DDO's......
  • Peaceman,

My Top 50 book shows that your pictures are of the v3 1934-D. The books gives no indication that there is doubling of IGWT for the v4, only profile doubling. Am I looking at this wrong?

    Thanks,

  • They share the same obverse double die......
  • It helps if I read the entire blurb for the VAM. image Even though they are the same obverse, the v3 page seems to emphasize the doubling on IGWT where the v4 emphasizes the doubled profile. The real difference is the reverse.

Thanks for pointing that out. . .

  • I have a Vam 3 and a Vam 4. The only difference is that the " D " ( the mintmark that is ) the Vam 3 looks like a " Blob ". A Vam 4 is a " Micro D " but very clearcut " D " like a donut, for a lack of a better way to put it as you can see the center of it, that is distinctive to the naked eye that it isn`t a " Blob ". TonedPeaceNuts` Picture looks like an example of a Vam 4.

The Vam 4 I have is graded by ANACS as a F12 that cost me $175. The Vam 3 is graded by PCGS as AU58 and cost me $175 as well. Also the Vam 4 " D " is set high.

  • Thanks for all the info --

    Here's what I can surmise ---

Indeed there are 6 that have doubling on the profile and on the D and WE. As for the mintmark -- the D is clear and strong and not filled. It seems to match the pic of the micro D in Van Allen's book I have. I have compared the D on the 6 I have to auction pics from Heritage VAM-3 sales. The mintmarks on my coins are much more clear and smaller.

I couldn't find any VAM-4 auctions on Heritage to compare though. I have compared the D to the micro designations and they seem to match.

    Looks like I scored 6 Vam-4s!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe NGC will designates these as a VAM-4 and a Top 50 as well -- is this correct?

  • I don`t know how NGC would notate it but, the ANACS I have says on the label " DBL DIE OBV VAM-4 ". The VAM 3 in the PCGS notates it as " Mint Error - PCGS AU58 - Doubled Die Obverse ". You can see it`s a VAM 4 but, for my aging eyes, I can see it is clearcut that it isn`t filled but, would be easier to see it with a loupe.image
