Grade my half roll of 1934-D Peace $ (Lots of huge pics)

I earlier posted this message about a half roll of 34-Ds I picked up for $16 a coin-- here's the link

Well, they arrived today -- these have to be from an original roll. I think 9 are MS with 1 possible AU55/58. I think the best might even go MS63/64.

The question is -- to dip or not to dip? All of them have great luster, but being original, they do have a skin which diminishes that cartwheel effect. Do I go for the higher grades and dip or leave these as is?

Any thoughts as to grades would be appreciated as well.

These are typical of the quality of most of the coins

This is the worst coin out of the entire half roll

This is best from the entire roll -- sorry for the somewhat out of focus shot, my hand was a little shaky from the excitement!

That last one looks pretty clean. Lots of major hits on the others. I wouldn't dip any of them. It just highlights the blemishes, IMHO. But, you got 'em at a good price.

  • I like the last one. image

  • I wouldn't dip them but whatever. Do however check for a doubled die obverse which is evident on the Motto, especially the D of GOD. Liberty's profile from the forehead down to the jaw is also doubled. And on that DDO, there is a medium and small D variety, the Small D is much rarer and worthy of a good premium.

The third coin down, the one with the horizontal scrach across the neck appears to be the DDO I'm talking about. The inside of the D in GOD looks doubled per the Cherrypickers' Guide.
  • Frattlaw, is that you?

    John --

I checked, and 6 of the 10 are DDOs. As for the mintmark -- medium or micro, I look in Van Allen's book -- bingo -- all 6 are the Micro D.

So what kinda of premium would that bring?

    Thanks

Heh, if memory serves me correct I remember a board member called Frattlaw that used to knock people for dipping only to receive higher grades for profit. Now a new member comes along and is asking should he dip for higher grades. I can hear the hands wringing and rubbing back and forth in greed. Hey no matter though Frattlaw isn't here to lecture you anyway. LOLOL

  • YOU STILL SUCK!!!
  • 3rd one down is a VAM 3..... all look like sliders to me... Good luck on those MS coins.... Nice price........

Micro "D"'s are way way down towards the end of the feathers and is itsy-bitsy.... You can also tell it's a "D" as it's very well defined... If you have 6 micro "D"...... you are a very rich man..... post them......
