Since neither Sacawagea nor Susan B. Anthony was ever elected President, we have to go back to the Eisenhower dollar to have six presidents in a proof set.

The Ike’s were last issued in 1978.

As my 6,000th post I'm having the 2004 Presidential Election Give-Away Contest - Dead Presidents on Metal

There are 3 parts to the contest:

1) Identify the year of The Prize
The prize will be the last REGULAR ISSUE proof set that contains the HIGHEST number of unique Presidents.

2) Identify the number of US Presidents that appear on US minted coins
Out of the 43 US Presidents, how many have appeared on a US coin since Congress created the US Mint?

3) Tie breaker – Who will win the 2004 Presidential Election and what will their electoral vote count be.

Example:
If you think the prize is a 2004 proof set (which contains 5 presidents); that there are 16 US Presidents on coins; and Bush will win with 288 electoral votes. Your entry would be:

1) 2004
2) 16
3) Bush - 288

Scoring - How to WIN
Your score will be calculated as the sum of the absolute value of the difference between the correct answer and your answer for the first two values. The lowest score wins (a score of zero means you got the first 2 correct).

If there is a tie, then the person who correctly guesses the President and is closest to the electoral vote wins. If there is still a tie, a random drawing will break the tie.

The deadline for entry is election day, Tuesday November 4th at 7 PM PST and the winner be hunted down once the election results are announced (or whenever the Supreme Court decides who the next President is).

Anyone under 18 is eligible automatically, but if you are 18 or over you MUST VOTE in the Presidential election to be eligible.

Note - I'm counting the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Gold Dollars as 2, even though the Redbook lists the Jefferson and McKinnley on the obverse as varities, we are counting Presidents here so I say these are different.

Actually it's a good educational research project and depending on your level of numismatic knowledge it can go pretty quick.

All of the answers are between pages 63 and 275 of the 2004 redbook (the rule in #2 says not to count Washington pieces or anything prior).

Basic knowledge would allow you to skip pages 63-230 and that same knowledge would allow you to deduce the year of the proof set.

So what is left? Well it's the commemoratives of course (pages 231-275). You flip through those pages and see if you see a President on the coin and if it different than the last coin, count it for #3. If it is new President, count that for #2.

Or you can just do a WAG.

I was just going to ask for some clarification (post guess) about what exactly you were considering a type. I just noticed that you took that part of the question out, but i would still like to know.

I took a look in the lingo section of the PCGS web site and this is what I get for a definition:

However, when I look in the Red Book, some coins which would qualify as a type under that definition are listed as varieties.

Could someone help me out here. I'm a bit confused with what the definition of a type would be.

Yeah ... although even if Bush won all three states still up for grabs (New Mexico, Iowa, and Ohio), that would only put him at 286, and Tassa would be closer.

since i have you busted on a technical error in your original post, i'd like to enter!!!!!!! here's my guess, only because with all the crap that's gone on in the last two elections with fraud and wrangling over votes it seems that the flaw in your listing should be grounds enough to honor my entry. and hey, don't deny it and make me haul in that team of lawyers i have waiting in wings, they're bored and just itching for a fight so they can use all that Ivy League schooling!!!

It turns out election day, Tuesday November 4th will occur in 2008

Since keets has filed a legal challange to contest the results we will, like the Democrats, have to wait until 2008 before it's over

By then perhaps Reagan will be on the dime and the scores will change

Until then, Tassa will be the keeper of the set, but if Kerry sweeps the 2008 election - it might go to keets
