you, like so many others, continue to confuse "the hobby" w/ "the business". i have no doubt that "the business" needs people like you, & that's all fine & dandy. but what the "the hobby" does NOT need is more fools who think that all they need to know is how to buy a piece of plastic w/ a certain number on it. these are the kinds of fools who spend freely because plastic means there's "no risk", & drive up the iditioc prices on coins for the rest of us.
why do you think coins have "performed" so well? do you REALLY think it's becuase there are more "collectors" buying? or do you suppose that it just might be that everyone has to subsidize the $400,000,000 that has been spent on plastic fees?

If you hate slabs, then Don't slab them. ??? Then, there is no problem for you! Hey, you HAVE to put the date and denomination on the slab!!! Do you know how many 1909 (even 1919) pennies would be sold as 1909-s VDB??? Do you not realize many would buy the wrong date, with out even looking at it???
Quite frankly, most of the double dies that are going around now would HAVE to state it on a slab for me..... I don't see it!!!
