11 Stupid people

It amazes me to see how many bids auctions like this one get.

The vintage star cards are in screw-downs and toploaders while his 2003-04 cards are PSA graded. So he pays to grade cards he pulled from a pack at Wal-Mart, but not Mantle rookies, Lou Gehrig or DiMaggio.

He has a feedback of 3, and those were all last April. This smells of a dormant account that's hijacked.

He gives discounts for cashier's checks and gives himself a few extra days on unanswered inquiries by saying he's "out of town a lot."

But on the other hand, he says he's trustworthy and honest. Phew! I guess I'll be bidder #12.

Not a typical scam, though. Wonder where the pictures came from?

Again, my feelings towards someone dumb enough to bid on this (as they are doing it solely out of greed) and other similar types of scam auctions... tough crap. They may not deserve what's coming to them, but they sure should have thought a little more about it before acting so quickly to throw away their money. If they are lucky, they will at least wind up with a bunch of low-mid grade vintage commons, that is if the seller even bothers to ship them anything.

There was some guy who set up shop last week (new account, 0 feedback) with a PSA 8 1952 Mantle, which he sold for $10K, then NARU the next day. Then, the same guy came back as a new account 3 days later, sold the same auction with the same picture of the card for $10K BIN, and of course disappeared the following day.

Ultimately, it is jerks like these scammers which are eventually going to raise seller prices on eBay, as eBay will be forced to employ more people to weed out these auctions. I see they did away with 1 day auctions on cars probably because there were too many scams there... I don't think it will be long before 1 day auctions are eliminated completely. But, this will only scratch the surface of the multitude of problems these scum sellers have created.
  • it sounds almost like the one we discussed about a month ago who said no one could pick up his fathers cards because his wife is a lawyer and gets spooked having people come to the house. i dont remember all the details except there was a huge lot of supposed star cards that his dad collected including two 52 topps mantles and 3 ? 51's. he put up a ton of scans with none being really visable at all.

ring any bells ? i believe it was a new jersey possibly newark address.

  • the bidders are probably as real as the cards

I think that a lot of the cards in the picture are reprints and thus the "value" of the lot is questionable - can't comment on honesty since I don't know. But, I will say that anyone who has a group of cards stored in this manner begs the question: WTF!!!!!

i would bet that under the few vintage cards that can be seen, cards from the late 80's fill the storage box. if cards do at all.

from the pic u would think that u will be getting graded cards and some decent vintage.
    Good for you.

Notice he also says that bidders should look at the list to see what they MAY be getting if they win. That could just be sloppy choice of words...or it could be a way to protect himself when he doesn't deliver the cards listed.

eBay really needs to do something, I mean we all know the cards are fake but I guess ebay would want proof. The Ruth is in a pop rivet screwdown that own guy who sells fakes uses. I guess that is where all the fakes came from. I think the bid is shilled to try to trick one unsuspecting buyer. May not be a hijacked account because they would have likely found a better high feedback one to use.

I would love to get my hands on the 1981 Topps Ripken card he says comes with the auction. That must be one rare card.
