Here it is, my 1886 Morgan AU and getting worse pocket piece. this is one months worth of wear. It cleaned up nicely but is getting kinda shiny. more nicks and scratches more scuffs in the fields. The wear is quite slow. will keep on taking shots periodically as long as I don't lose it.

  • I have never understood the whole pocket piece thing, but I think it's an interesting experiment. It's not like it's a rare or expensive coin and I guess it would lead to some interesting conversations if you pulled it out in a crowd image

    Make a time-lapse movie - shoot a pic every day for 5 years.imageimage

A time lapse would be kinda cool. I'll try to take one every month or so.

  • That would be cool! image My pocket piece(s) currently is 3 Kennedy Halves, two 1972-Ds and a Bicen... one of the 72-Ds I worked over with my hands for a couple weeks... a lot of times, I really can't sit still without doing something... tapping my foot, drumming on the table, etc. etc. so, for a while, when I was at my computer I'd work it over with my hands... I really didn't see any difference, but then, recently, I started carrying it, and the other two around in my pocket, and the one turned grey! It looks so nice!! image And it's easier to see where the wear is, and I have seen some slight changes image

    Neat thread! Keep it updated!!

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

  • This thread could take a long time. I had a Sac dollar I used as a pocket piece for awhile. I started carrying it the first day Wal-Mart started distributing them. After two years it only got down to XF. (It went through some interesting color changes during that period too.)
  • Great photos. I'd love to see a time lapse of this process. I think one photo a month should be just fine! What else do you normally have in your pocket? Keys? Other change?

Mainly keys are cohabitating with it.

I yhink it would be interesting to a have a pocket where the coin was the old hard object present, and another pocket with the test coin and other metal objects present (like you're doing). I suspect the coin in the soft pocket will wear a whole lot more attractively that the other one. The silver dollar you're testing looks like it's getting really scratched up quite a bit, which is really not all that surprising. It is interesting that some of the unattractive blothches present at the start of the process have been effectively wiped off the surface of the coin. brightening it.
