Thanks BigE. You Inadvertently Led Me to a Coin I've Been Searching 15+ Years For!

Thanks BigE, for posting this: Nice Low Grade Hawaiian

I stalked this auction like a mo fo as I was in no way going to miss out on this one! I had heard of this coin in the past, and had placed it on multiple want lists through-out the years. I even told Mitch (Wondercoin) I was on the endless search for it about three years ago. I came close, about two years ago at Long Beach, but the lead I was given ended up being bogus.

It just arrived today! Now, before you state I paid too much, let me agree with you. But, with that being said, my max bid was $1,855.56, so I was pleased with the final result. I know I could have possibly sniped this one and maybe paid less, but I didn't want to play any games and possibly mess that up.

With a mintage of 10,000 I have to imagine this is the ONLY low grade, problem free Hawaiian Commemorative there is on the planet. And... it's now found it permanent home.

    Hi Braddick,
Is it that you collect Commems in 'Good' that makes this such a special snag ? I haven't paid that much attention to them, but I thought that Hawaiians could always be had.....Just wondering.....
That "IS" a neat looking coin too !!

Paul- I enjoy collecting these Commemoratives as finding them in problem free low grade condition is, in some cases, more difficult than the Uncirculated versions. They're usually a little cheaper too.
I had been chasing this one for so long I had really kind of given up as I had to figure it is socked away somewhere in another enthusiasts collection.

George, I shot this one with the sun setting, but you're right... I need to check that white balance! I was in a rush to photo it though.

Why don't they put the date on the slab label?

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Hey Pat, if you crack that sucker out and use it as a pocket piece for a bit you should be able to get it holdered with a more desireable grade.

<< <i>Why don't they put the date on the slab label? >>

Just a guess here, but I believe on early Commemoratives, if the coin is a one year run, then PCGS (and, others?) don't place the (obvious) grade on the insert.

That's just mere speculation though as I don't have a definitive answer. Good question though!

Pat: I can't believe your search is finally over !! Wow - what a score - I'll have to tell the guys who have been carrying them around in their pockets for 3 years to lighten up on the change! image

    Very good looking coin.

And not to knock the rarity of the piece in that grade, but it was, in my mind, almost certainly a pocket piece that someone (one person) carried around for years and years.

I find it impossible to believe it was spent and changed hands enough times to wear it down to Good+ condition.

The reason I think this, rather than think it circulated, is because it's just too neat looking a coin not to save if almost anyone got it in change.

Braddick, in the context of your collection of well-worn condition census (low end) coins, it fits perfectly. image

  • Congrats - excellent coin for your set!

I agree that it had to be someone's pocket piece...wonder who's?

And, you were bidding against the snake and left him eating your dust. That doesn't happen often.
