I couldn't wait to get this photographed and posted. Guess the grade? Picture doesn't show it well, but there is plenty of luster.
Ill give more info on this coin in a day or two, unless somebody can identify it.

now find me an 1846 like that!

Nice coin!
But only for those who keep old auction catalogs.
This is in an NGC first gen holder MS63. Along with the coin, came the original Garrett collection auction Stack's envelope. I got this and put an 1835 half dime on lay-away in the same condition with it's envelope. The 1835 isn't as toned and is also a MS63.

Great coin. The old holder should tell you it's probably a 64+ today.
Nice, original and unscrewed with. What a nice change from the conserved crap. Would be happy to own that for 64 money

At this point, I will probably keep it in the original NGC holder. I thought about sending it to PCGS. If I did, I would want ex-Garrett on it. What proof does PCGS need to put that on a holder?
<< <i>Thanks for the comments. I did pay a premium for this, but in my opinion, well worth it. I think it would easily go 64 today. The pictures may not show it well. If only I had a service provider that could host nice images, maybe I could do better. By the time I take a decent photo, cut down on the image size, reduce pixels, save for web, the coin doesn't look like the coin in hand.

VERY nice half dime. I love original coins! About your pics - just email them to me (don't bother with the "save for web", just resize to an appropriate size) and I'll be happy to host them for you - I've got 10 GB and nothing to fill it.
If I were you I'd sit tight in that early NGC MS63 holder. There are any number of sight seen buyers who will buy the coin as is. They are well aware of a potential 2-3 point shift on some coins. I recently sold a Barber quarter in a MS64 first gen PCGS holder for
50% over MS65 money. And down the road, who knows what kind of fanaticism could result for early holder premiums. If it were my coin, I'd stay put for now unless I felt it was a near sure shot for a MS65. There are precious few very early holdered coins that are really nice. They just might become like CC dollars in GSA holders.

When I first looked at the scan I was thinking ms/65, and depending on the luster, it could or should get there.
An outstanding looking coin.
Don't feel slighted by the lack of responses, remember, it's a half dime. All 14 of us that like these coins aren't always floating on the boards at the same time.
Thanks for sharing the pic's.

The strike on the obverse is extremely strong. You can see her sandle and even her toe nail. The reverse is weaker showing mostly at the "AL" in HALF.
I have seen a lot worse in 63 holders. I may bring it to the next major show I attend just to get a PCGS or NGC opinion.
See Roadrunner's comments as proof.
Again, a great looking coin.

BigD5 is right. You don't need PCGS or NGC opinions on that. Unless they're buying it, what's the opinion really worth? MS63 CDN bid on that coin is $310. MS64 bid is $505. I'd pay $525 for such a coin sight unseen. Being a nice original old NGC holdered coin certainly helps. If I felt (sight seen) it had a reasonable chance to go 65, I'd offer a minimum of $750....and take my chances. If the coin were a stone 65 sitting in that 63 holder, you should be able to get offers starting at $1200 on up. In other words, you don't need a TPG opinion. But do show it around to various dealers and see what kind of response you get. No doubt the majority of "offers" would fall into the $300-400 range. You would likely even get an "offer" as low as $275! BuI do think that the chatter in the field above "half" on the reverse would be the limiting area.
