I couldn't wait to get this photographed and posted. Guess the grade? Picture doesn't show it well, but there is plenty of luster.

Maybe I need photo help. You guys are low on grades. Part of the problem is "Save to Web" alters the picture a bit. The reverse does not look as scratched in hand than it does as posted.

    Nice coin!

Maybe this will be enough of a hint...

But only for those who keep old auction catalogs.

OK, no one replied in two hours, so either no one cared, or the hint wasn't good enough or maybe people were eating dinner.

This is in an NGC first gen holder MS63. Along with the coin, came the original Garrett collection auction Stack's envelope. I got this and put an 1835 half dime on lay-away in the same condition with it's envelope. The 1835 isn't as toned and is also a MS63.
  • Very Pretty half dime dude!

Great looking coin. I've seen far worse in NGC MS65 holders. I couldn't tell if the color changes in the right obv field were luster breaks...but LIb's leg doesn't appear to show any rubbing. Same for breasts, arm, head. etc. This should have no problem going MS64 and possibly 65 today.

Great coin. The old holder should tell you it's probably a 64+ today.
Nice, original and unscrewed with. What a nice change from the conserved crap. Would be happy to own that for 64 moneyimage

Thanks for the comments. I did pay a premium for this, but in my opinion, well worth it. I think it would easily go 64 today. The pictures may not show it well. If only I had a service provider that could host nice images, maybe I could do better. By the time I take a decent photo, cut down on the image size, reduce pixels, save for web, the coin doesn't look like the coin in hand.

At this point, I will probably keep it in the original NGC holder. I thought about sending it to PCGS. If I did, I would want ex-Garrett on it. What proof does PCGS need to put that on a holder?

VERY nice half dime. I love original coins! image About your pics - just email them to me (don't bother with the "save for web", just resize to an appropriate size) and I'll be happy to host them for you - I've got 10 GB and nothing to fill it.

I'm not sure what proof PCGS needs to relabel the coin. But the auction flip and a photo (if possible) would seal it. On the other hand, I'm sure there weren't photos of all of Eliaberg's coins and many of the minors got labeled.

If I were you I'd sit tight in that early NGC MS63 holder. There are any number of sight seen buyers who will buy the coin as is. They are well aware of a potential 2-3 point shift on some coins. I recently sold a Barber quarter in a MS64 first gen PCGS holder for
50% over MS65 money. And down the road, who knows what kind of fanaticism could result for early holder premiums. If it were my coin, I'd stay put for now unless I felt it was a near sure shot for a MS65. There are precious few very early holdered coins that are really nice. They just might become like CC dollars in GSA holders.

    I agree with Roadrunner.

When I first looked at the scan I was thinking ms/65, and depending on the luster, it could or should get there.

    An outstanding looking coin.

Don't feel slighted by the lack of responses, remember, it's a half dime. All 14 of us that like these coins aren't always floating on the boards at the same time. imageimage

    Thanks for sharing the pic's.

  • Hi tmott99. This coin is gorgeous! A no questions UNC. Some may have been fooled by the "toning break" on Liberty's thigh - this is not wear. There appears to be a "hit" on Liberty's neck (is that just on the photo?) which, for my standards would give it an ms64. The reverse has a little noise around the "A & L" of "half" and the "M" of dime. Lustre looks powerful and the color is terrific. Strike is good too. Overall, I would grade it around ms64. imagematteproof

Yes, there is a hit on the neck. The chatter on the reverse shows up much more on the photo than on the coin. They are very light surface marks and are more of a scuff than a scratch. They certainly appear to be deeper in the photos.

The strike on the obverse is extremely strong. You can see her sandle and even her toe nail. The reverse is weaker showing mostly at the "AL" in HALF.

I have seen a lot worse in 63 holders. I may bring it to the next major show I attend just to get a PCGS or NGC opinion.

I don't think you need pcgs or ngcs' opinion on that coin. Anyone in hte know for that type of seated material would pay a premium for that coin regardless of what the holder says.

    See Roadrunner's comments as proof.

    Again, a great looking coin.

DH mentions sending in invoices from the sale as proof. While that works, it would not be inconceivable that someone could send in an invoice for a common date coin, and associate it with a diff coin. With all the tricks going on these days, I'd be surprised if that hasn't happenend. That would make old invoices from "name" sales valuable.

BigD5 is right. You don't need PCGS or NGC opinions on that. Unless they're buying it, what's the opinion really worth? MS63 CDN bid on that coin is $310. MS64 bid is $505. I'd pay $525 for such a coin sight unseen. Being a nice original old NGC holdered coin certainly helps. If I felt (sight seen) it had a reasonable chance to go 65, I'd offer a minimum of $750....and take my chances. If the coin were a stone 65 sitting in that 63 holder, you should be able to get offers starting at $1200 on up. In other words, you don't need a TPG opinion. But do show it around to various dealers and see what kind of response you get. No doubt the majority of "offers" would fall into the $300-400 range. You would likely even get an "offer" as low as $275! image BuI do think that the chatter in the field above "half" on the reverse would be the limiting area.
