Question for Large Cent Specialists

Would the Large Cent Specialists on the board please give me some input on the 1828 Large Cent "small date" N-10? I'm told the coin is very scarce in AU and better grade. The PCGS population for the 1828 "small date" Large Cent is very low (7 coins all grades) which leads me to believe the coin may be as scarce as I've been told. The PCGS pop reveals only one Unc and the rest lower grade. Finally, is the "N-10" variety anything special or does this just depict the "small date" feature. Any input, comments on this coin/date/variety are greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your kind replies. imagematteproof

They may not have started designating the "small date" variety until recently, making it look artificially scarce. This is the case with many mid-19th century variety coins, but I'm not sure about this one in particular.

Another point is that few high grade large cents are submitted to PCGS because copper enthusiasts who own them often have no respect for PCGS grades and prefer their coins raw. So Pop reports mean little.

N-10 is the only small date variety, I believe.

    1. Only small date, and it also has a unique reverse die. It's a low rarity-2, I believe.

If 1828 is your bag, look for N-4, N-9, or N-12, which are closer to Rarity-4.

  • Rhedden and MacCrimmon have provided great info. Additional info:

In 2/2000, an AU-50 sold for $1,265. In April of 2000, an AU-50 sold for $230, though it was overgraded and had problems. Bowers sold an MS-61 (NGC) for $805 in October of 2000.

  • The 1828 N10 (small date) is a rarity 1 date according to Noyes' Penny Prices July 2003 price guide. The EAC price for an AU50 is $1000. The PCGS equivalent grade is AU55/58 to MS63. There are two rarity 4 varities for 1828: N4 and N9.

CVM coins (a great place to acquire large cents in my opinion) has the following 1828 for sale:

    1828 N-3 R2 AU50
    $1,100.00

Choice glossy light steel brown, the reverse with some darker steel brown overtones. A small dark olive spot right of star 3 and a tiny nick between stars 6 and 7 the only marks. Sharp EDS, the reverse fields smooth and hard without die clashmarks.

The N10 should go for about the same price.

CVM Coins' web site is a good place to view large cents.

ttt for anything not about GtG. This topic is beaten to death already!
Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!
  • Hi Jade, OB, and INJM. Thank you for your input. Those prices are very helpful as is the CVM website recommendation. I will be sure to check it out. Thank you all again. image matteproof
