And for those who don't like color ..........

Let's try a 1650-I French 1/2 ecu - it is a bit frosty though, so I hope you folks who like white coins don't mind image

  • YES! Ah at last a proper white coin. So you do have some taste GD, i was beginning to wonder... image

    And i want one.
  • Another nice one, but you have to wonder how a 350 year old coin has no tonning....

Looks like a touch of gold patination near the edges. Perfect image

I was wondering about that myself - the TONING that is.
  • The coin is very, very lightly toned - it is just not evident in the pics. I will admit - it is unusual for such a coin to not be toned - but certainly not unheard of.

But it seems everyone is missing the obvious - staring you in the face obvious image C'mon folks - surely somebody can see this image

Is this a contest? Are you giving the coin away already? imageimage

It's really nice, but I'm not familiar with them so I'm not sure what you might be referring to.. here's what I notice:

Looks like doubling on the bottom of Louie's nose and the top right fleur (of the shield)?
Is that a crack left of the laurel's stems?
What's the distortion at 1200 on obverse rim/legend?
What are the flecks in the fields, esp at 0500OBV and 0700REV (looks like luster or dust to me, but I dunno)?
Great detail on the chest/shoulder! I like the animal face on the breastplate. image

I should say I'm not being critical here--it's an awesome coin--just analytical image So what are you talking about?
  • OK - here's a clue - look up any 1/2 ecu from this period in Krause. Read the legends. And before someone ask - the coin is slabbed - NGC MS64.

  • ok, I have no book - will check back later to find out what's the darn deal here. image
  • OK I'll tell you - there should only 1 F in the obverse legend. It should read - FR. - not F. FR.

  • Now you see when it's the first one you've ever seen you wouldn't even notice! image

I had noticed it was bigger but i just kinda figured it was just the way they were. This is before i read about the long discussion you had with Ian on Cointalk about it. Which to be honest went over my head since i do not know anything about the area but i did get the gist of it.

Didn't look overstruck to me neither.
  • Is there a J under the bust?
  • No - that is just part of the design.
