Advice on Teletrade

I was winning bidder in Monday's Teletrade on an 1856-S Seated Dime in AU-55 ANACS. My intenetion was to send it to PCGS for a cross over.

I arrived today and has been rather harshly cleaned. I am not sure what to do.

1 - Return to TT, but restocking, etc fees will be over $200.
2 - Send to PCGS and hope for the best.
3 - Be happy that I have a high grade rare dime, and do nothing.

Any thoughts?

ANACS didn't think it was cleaned? They are usually pretty good at this and net grade it. Tough choices.

My apologies; welcome to the boards!

  • For those of you who are not aware, if you return a coin to Teletrade you WILL incur a “restock” fee along with other fees they see fit no matter how many coins you’ve bought from them in the past. I personally lost over $ 50.00 returning a $ 850 coin after I didn’t agree with the coin’s description. Frankly, it wasn’t even close to the description. Good luck with your purchase..........

  • You learned a valuable lesson, the hard way. Stay away from teletrade

I'd probably go with #3, but that's just me. I might try #2.

If it wasn't harshly cleaned enough for ANACS to net-grade it, it wouldn't bother me. And PCGS might grade it.

From what I can see in the pics, it looks pretty dang nice, cleaned or not.

Oh. Wait. Ziggy posted those pics. Now I'm really confused. image

  • Thanks for posting the picture.

If you look at the subtle change in color just to the center of the stars, that dull area is because the reflection was taken up by a lot of criss cross cleaning lines. Same on both sides, but reverse much less.

If someone does try to send into PCGS, do you leave it in the ANACS holder?

PS: You guys are great. I posted 15 minutes ago and already have lots of replys.

Normally I think a crackout is a better idea to get the grade you expect...BUT if you anticipate a potential bodybag, better to cross it over in the holder.
  • Mostly depends on how much the coin is worth... if you think it might bag, leave it in the holder and go for a cross, especially if it's a higher value coin... if it's low value and/or low chance of BB, crack it... hopefully it works out image

Call Paul Song at TT......he will work with you.

Peaceman, it's not like that at all. There are no "hidden fees" that they haphazardly charge anyone, they simply refund your bid price PLUS your buyer's fee and deduct 5% of the bid price plus $10 for any item over $200, otherwise it's 5% + $5. They also will work with you (at least in my experience) if you're nice to them. They may frown upon people who return a high percentage of coins, for example. Teletrade recently waived an entire auction worth of buyer's fees for me because I alerted them to a glitch in their system. They've gotten much better since Paul Song got there, and their pictures have gotten better, too.

By all means, send it to PCGS in the ANACS holder. DON'T crack it out! At least now it's in a holder. If it doesn't cross, you could always send it back to TT if you're unhappy and have them sell it for you. There was an underbidder and they might be willing to pay more if you return it. You might win or lose, but it's a gamble at times. If you are happy with the coin, just tuck it away in your collection. Why did you buy the coin? If it looked good in the photo and fits in your sets then it's a "keeper". I bought a proof 63 Barber half about 2 years ago, looked nice. But it had a "wipe/scuff" on the face and a different colored spot on the left obverse. Reverse was great. I posted a photo here and was talked into returning it. Wrong descision! I've seen several since and they are much worse for more money.

I agree with Tonekiller. Call Paul @ TT and work it out with him.

If you do decide to submit it to PCGS, I'd leave it holdered as is and hope for the best.

The picture really doesn't show any cleaning lines...looks like a nice coin...

The buyer says he sees a lot of "criss cross lines." I wonder if the coin was dipped and wiped instead? I'm not sure it looks "harshly cleaned," unless it looks much different in hand -- and I have difficulty imagining that ANACS would slab something not net-graded in that case. Dipped and wiped, I could believe, as those aren't (by themselves) "net graded" or "body bagged" coins by default.
  • Centmaster. I talked to them personally.... I had bought 6-7 coins from them in the past... This was my FIRST return and they wacked me... They wouldn't budge on the fee... I was told that it's listed on the web site, you should be aware....

Again.... ANY teletrade post on the board.... you'll see this....
