Dug, perhaps? They get dark like that in the ground, sometimes.

Judging from the denticles and the star in the background, you laid it on top of a REALLY BIG coin before snapping the picture, huh?

Well, I'd have thought that too, but don't I see some different color striping on the edge, indicating the layers are there?

I noticed the same thing. I believe this is just a heavily toned quarter.

Just looks discolored and the edge shot does look like it shows the layers.
