Should I Join PCGS?

Hello everyone- Looking for some advice. I've been reading the forum for some time now and am still trying to decide if I should spend the $99 and jion PCGS? I like modern coinage as a rule and have a few pieces I would like to submit. Any input would be appreciated!

  • I personally would say that if unless you've got a lot of money to dump, don't do it. Im not disrespecting PCGS, but if you don't know what your doing or are unsure at this point, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to join now. I would say join, if you have some super coins, know how to grade, are well aware its expensive, and are willing to do that. BTW, welcome to the forums.

For me, it is worth it if I have 4 coins to submit as I use the pop reports. It is an even trade as I do have a dealer who will submit for me, and can do some things for a discount.

So, depends on how much you want to submit, whether you have access to an authorized dealer and if you use the pop reports.

Probably not. With modern coins you can probably buy them already slabbed cheaper that it will cost you to submit. Between S/H/I back and forth it will cost you about $15 per slab.

Unless you can get a PR70DCAM or a MS68/69/70 on the business strike (depending on the coin) it's cheaper to let somebody else slab them.

For $99 you get 4 free submissions, which would only be worth it for clasic coins > $300 (you still have to pay S/H/I both ways too)

Welcome. If you don't mind blowing $100 on grading fees, go for it. But generally a better idea of you have a few high-dollar coins to submit.

    i would go for it

you can get a ms69 pcgs slabbed american eagle and also one year to the pop reports and then you can submit coins directly to pcgs and also 4 free coin grades it is worth a shot to do it and also try submitting some coins with your 4 free grades

also other specials during the year for members

sounds like a good deal to me for 99 dollars

the two year is even better at 179

    Should I Join PCGS?

Should anybody tell you not to on their website? I would think if they want to be posting here tomorrow they'd hold their tongue.

  • Go to a PCGS dealer and ask if your coins are worth more than $99 graded. If not submit through him at economy rate. You are still welcome here regardless!

  • I'm wondering right now if I should re-up. I've gotten most of the high $$ coins I own moved
over into PCGS slabs, so I'm not sure if I have enough planned submissions to get my grading
fees back. (Don't get me wrong, I've gotten good use out of my free submissions for the past
    few years)

if it's the coinage you like, ie the coins, why would you want 'em stuck in a piece of plastic?

save your $99 & go buy a couple more nice pieces.

............no offense meant to relayer, but don't listen to these "words of wisdom" that are well intentioned but nonetheless, errant. if you're selective with your submissions it really doesn't matter what you submit. some "classic" common date generic material isn't worth submitting unless it'll holder at MS65 or better since the price of these four free submissions is closer to $40 when it's all said and done.

there's always the option of joining as a silver member and submitting. that has less choices for submitting, but might be a way to get your feet wet.

Remember, as with anything in this hobby, use discretionary money. With that thought, if it makes you happy to join and you think it can be fun then do so! I thought it would be fun and it has been. Sometimes I'm surprised like with my 1967 SMS MS68CAM and sometimes I can be crestfallen like my 1974 half which was bagged as cleaned (I thought a lock for 66/7). But ultimately it's about having some fun.

NO, please don't! There are so many coins now at PCGS 4 more might put them over the top!!! image
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I was a member when they had their $25 special. That was the one and only time I submitted coins to PCGS. I've been cracking out (and leaving raw) many more coins than I've been slabbing lately. For that reason, I like NGC slabs better - they're easier to crack. With the PCGS slabs, pieces go flying everywhere.

    oops!

what i meant to say earlier is, YES, of COURSE you should join! in fact, in addtion to the $99, you should kick in an extra 50 just to support "the cause"! heck, why not just buy a membership for your kids & each of their kids, and maybe even their pet geckos as well! the more moderns in plastic, the more better!!!

    Welcome to the Forum.

And by the way, you can probably find better ways to spend $99. But that's just me.

  • I think it depends on whether you are wanting to get coins graded and slabbed or not.
Then how many coins are you planning to submit over the next year too.

  • Do you not want to receive PMs?

edited: Someone brought up paying for S/H/I for the free submissions. I waited sometime getting together my 8 free of the "same type" submissions for joining. Then when I went to the St. Louis show, I dropped them off at PCGS's table. And I have some more I am either going to drop off with them at the Baltimore, FUN, or Houston show. If you're going anyway, why not.
