Went north to view the raw Morgans causing all the buzz

Well, as some of you who have PM'd me already know, I had personally viewed the three raw coins that just recently sold. These are the coins, that all the NT/AT crap was about. I think just about everybody in the world weighed in with an opinion on these.
Today I had a chance to go view all the rest of the coins from this deal. WOW, there are still some incredible coins to come. Including five of the most incredible reverse toned Morgans I have ever seen. Now I am not a big reverse toning guy, but these five particular coins were amazing. Each was more impressive than the last. In my opinion the coins were64/65 quality maybe 66 but, the reverses were 67-68 just awsome. He also had some more really, really neat obverse toners. I made a stack of about 6-8 obverse and 5 reverse that were as nice or better than the ones that were already sold.
I had been told I would have a chance to pick out what I wanted for my collection after the three on ebay were sold. This was done this way so that the market price for these coins would be estabolished. (why the hell did you guys bid them up so high). I wanted all of the coins I picked out but ended up chosing just two.
Thus leaving some for the rest of you guys. There are some real beauty's coming up.
There are about 200 toners from this deal but, not all are of quality that you have seen. A lot are average to good. A few not so good at all. the rest are really neat. It is my opinion that these coins having viewed them and the bags are all original. These coins sat for a long time just waiting to be found. The owner said he could not believe his eyes when he opened the bags and saw all the toners. Good for him, everyone is entitled to hit a grand slam once in awhile. Jeezz even the Red Sox might win a world series or something.

By the way I'll post pictures of my new coins in a seperate post after I get them photo'd
Edited to add that just because I only put aside 7 or 8 obverse toners to really look at , does not mean there were not other A quality coins. It just means those were the one I'm partial to. I passed on about a dozen rainbow crescents like big moose bought

Thanks for the report. So, what you are saying is that it is your belief/professional opinion that these coins, and the rest the seller sells from this are all NT?
May I ask, if you know, why the seller has elected to sell RAW rather than NGC/PCGS graded which may bring in higher money for him/them since there are people who would pay strong(er) money if they were in a respected TPG slab?
Is it normal for so many from 1 bag to be toned? Was it environmental? How many bags were involved?
Thanks...looking forward to your pics
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
I am very happy Toneddollars was able to secure a couple of these coins for his collection.
If this seller lists toned dollars from this specific collection, then yes, they are NT. 100% without a doubt. After the prices realized for the three coins they listed, certification isn't necessary, in their eyes.
I believe Toneddollars would also like to thank anyone involved with facilitating his viewing of these coins.......

<< <i>Very interesting, It would also be interesting to hear from some of the board members who adamantly called these coins AT in the earlier thread on the subject. >>
Who said they were no good?
First off the deal is very recent. Second, Why do they have to be sent in to TPG. Collectors with knowledge of toning after looking at these coins will agree they are real. And I guess lastly for now why bother, they are getting stupid money for them the way they are now. Why spend anything else on them. Three bags were purchased a bag of 81-s's a bag of 1922 peace and a mixed bag of unc. 81-s's and circ coins.
Put a few coins on Ebay get an idea of what the market will bring and go from there.

Ask the question and wait for an answer. Get the answer and ask another question. The true story gets told in this way.
"Was it environmental?"
Would have to be. It takes water for a chemical reaction to occur on the surface of a coin that is in contact with the sulphur in the cloth of the bag. No water, no reaction and even the coins in contact with the cloth of the bag would stay brilliant.

Sounds like the owner is more of an accumulator, in the style of Redfield, than a collector. What do those 1922 Peace dollars look like?

<< <i>For nice toners IMHO grade is largely irrelevant up to 65 for common dates like the 81-S. >>
Yep. As far as certification from a TPG goes, it's like slabbing well-circulated key dates. In that case, you're not slabbing so much for the grade opinion as for the opinion of authenticity. In the case of toned coins, especially toned Morgans, you do it not because you wonder whether the coin will come back as 62 or 64, but because you want some theoretically "expert" opinion that the coin is not AT.
For these types of coins, the *grade* assigned to them are secondary to the fact that the coin was slabbed.
<< <i>What coins are we talking about? Who is the seller? >>
Sunnywood,
Here's one of them - the most recent sold.

Appears that the coin on top shifted at some early point during the toning cycle as evidenced by not one, but two crescents, on the toned coin, "most recent sold." It's logical to assume that the "covering" coin would have toning consistent with this shift.
