Whining time again...WHY IS THIS NOT A MS65?? BIGGER PIC!

Second attempt at upgrade...and the picture hides NOTHING!! I have NEVER seen a 1909/8 MS64 that comes close to this....It has much more lustre than pic shows...

Sometimes it is useful to get another, unbiased, opinion. As David Hall has said "Ownership adds a point". Another reason is the politics. They just want another grading fee. Did you send it regular or express?

Beats me. It's a nice looking coin. I know there is a serious price jump with the 65 (and that coin ain't cheap to start with). I have heard that they are tougher on liner coins when there is a significant price rise involved. Normally, I would glibly say "Send that dog to me, and I will take it off your hands", but it would probably cost me more than any coin in my collection if I did! image

anyone got a pic of the famed 1933?? From what I remember, this certainly looks nicer than the 1933 and I found this in an article on here about the '33.

Multitudinous questions about the condition of the coin were put to rest prior to the sale when four experts from the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) viewed the piece and unanimously declared it to be MS65. Because the coin is pedigreed to King Farouk and the monarch was notorious for abrasively cleaning and/or lacquering coins, there was concern that the 1933 $20 had suffered a similar fate. Fortunately that was not the case and the coin was found to be in Gem-quality condition.

That coin certainly looks clean to me. How is the luster?

Did you crack it or submit it for regrade in the holder?. If you believe in the coin you
have to crack it. Believe it or not I have had better luck sending them to NGC (after
a couple attempts at PCGS) and then crossing them.

Ya know...6 months ago I would have cracked it, but since then I made a big boo-boo cracking a coin and I don't have the stones to do it again...not with a 14K coin...for all I know they may be 64ing it because it was clothed ot something and get bodybagged...?? I just am not going to take the risk again.

It is a beautiful coin, enjoy it. Sorry David didnt make you $28,000 +/- profit for a small submission fee. What PCGS calls it does not detract from its beauty, just your net worth (which is considerable anyway).

Good luck on the next upgrade attempt, perhaps a presidential review would help.

Nice shin-chops, huh?? And the fat King was known to polish AND lacquer his gems!!!image

Here's the dilly-O. Even if it NEVER goes 65 (which it eventually will) in an auction I am certain it would bring a huge premium...the 64 is worth $14K and the 65 is ~$40K...so it could go to a crack-out artist for ??$25K??

By the way...this pic is in the old holder...if you notice two faint lines to the left of Liberty, they are holder scratches.

It also leads to the question, why are some MS 65's not?

From that pic, that piece not only looks like a 65, but a strong 65. In fact, I've seen common dates in both PCGS and NGC MS66 holders that looked worse. Perhaps that pic doesn't show something, I dunno.

I can't disagree with the grade on that. While I would say it looks nice for a 64, I can also see why they'd choose not to give it a 65.

Of course, I can still count the number of Saints I have owned on my fingers.

I sent a common-date later Saint that looked like that to ANACS once (I'd cracked it out of an old INS MS65 photo slab). I was certain it was a 65 and maybe even PQ for the grade. They 63'ed it. image

It's an interesting point about the 1933. NO WAY do I personally think that should've ever graded 65, with that huge gash on Liberty's knee. If you or I got hit that bad, we'd need stitches. It was bound to sell for millions and millions no matter how they graded it, so I don't see why it really matters. One wonders, though.

IMO, the very same reason the 1933 graded MS65 is the reason the 09/8 graded 64. Collectors focus too much on marks and not enough on blasty luster. The luster on the 09/8 doesn't seem to roll, whereas the 1933's fields are alive with cartwheel bloom.
  • Maybe it is worth paying for a walk through at the next big show?
  • saintgurusaintguru Posts: 7,724 ✭✭✭
Bruce...I just can't capture the lustre without creating too much "flash" from the coin, so I have to dumb-down the brightness. I'm certainly not a pro photographer...taking pics on the carpet in my den.image But it IS a highly lustrous coin...maybe even too much...which makes me wonder if perhaps it wasn't once "clothed" and that's what is holding it down.

I will definately take it to FUN and have David look at it befoe I do the walkthru...I have never had luck at shows, though...but I have had upgrades by mail-in. Just the luck of the draw.

  • Did you retain the pedigree in the new holder after re-submitting it?
  • mgoodm3mgoodm3 Posts: 17,497 ✭✭✭
They just want to get a bit more cash out of you prior to awarding the upgrade. Gotta make it worthwhile for PCGS.

I did leave the Ped. in...but they crack it out before it goes in the grading room, so I don't know why it would matter??
    image
  • My thought was that with the pedigree, the graders might be familar with your coin and are thus pre-inclined to give it the same grade. Even if they do not know the pedigree, the coin, I wonder if the graders recognize it when it comes in for a re-grade. However, I don't know the pop in 64 and 65, so I may be off base (but at $15k and $45k, can't be that high)
