I am a possession guy myself....that's why I collect more than just coins. I do like the history of coins and the mystery surounding where they've been and what they've seen over the years so that's the main driver for me.
It is the mix. It is searching, searching and more searching, finding, then pulling out your wallet and buying it...at that very moment bliss is attained.
I have to admit that I HATE the search. You know how long it can take to find an original VF30 1904-S (half dollar) to buy? Who has a decade to kill visiting every damn coin shop and coin show all in futility?
I like the OWNING, and knowing that finally, the searching can stop! LOL
I like the hunt, but only for so long. Then it's time to move on. I'm working on changing that. I have decided to start a lifetime collection to build a nice half dime set. I can work on nice type coins or series while I take my time looking for nice half dimes.

I'm in that same type of place. I think of the people that made the coins, the country as it was when those coins were fresh minted, who/why/how were the coins we have now removed from the stream of commerce? What collectors gave them a home before they came our way? Who or what will they see next? I vote 'pleasure of possession' but I know we have them for only a fleeting moment, in the greater scheme of life. I'm not so much into the search only because great coins are all around us, everywhere. I have so many holes to fill, in my current quest, it's too early to focus on specifics.

It gives me a reason to get out of the house, go somewhere, see more coins and meet more people.

A collection brings order.

Call out the ferrets!
Enjoying "keeping" them also keeps them off the market.
The search is fun, but personally it's only the means to the end.

I collect mainly for the pleasure of possession, although the hunting for coins is enjoyable.
